Role
Who you are
- We’re searching for a talented, mission-driven full-stack engineer with an API/systems focus who is excited to innovate across our architecture and scale mental health access
- BA/BS degree in computer science, engineering or equivalent experience
- 8+ years of professional software development experience
- Proven track record of successfully leading delivery of complex, cross-functional projects and teams
- Demonstrated ability to make pragmatic technical decisions, balancing product requirements with long-term strategy and trade-offs
- Excellent communication skills, with the ability to translate complex technical concepts for both technical and non-technical audiences
- Proven ability to mentor and coach engineers, fostering technical growth and elevating team capabilities. Creating clarity and empathy, fostering a culture of courageous feedback and continuous improvement
- Expertise in system design and architectural patterns for building large-scale, distributed applications
- Demonstrated experience in API Development using Typescript/Node.js and/or Python/Django
- Proficiency with modern frontend frameworks (e.g., React, Next.js) and state management libraries (Redux)
- Experience with testing best practices (unit, integration, E2E) and observability tools (logging, monitoring, alerting)
Desirable
- MS degree in computer science or a related engineering field
- Experience building software in health tech or a similarly regulated industry
- Familiarity with mobile development frameworks, such as Flutter
What the job involves
- Headspace is looking for a Staff Software Engineer, Fullstack to join our Platform Engineering team
- This team builds the core capabilities that support our commercial partnerships, including enrollment, eligibility, authentication, and entitlements
- Your work will span working across the backend services that power this functionality for all of Headspace’s membership offerings, in addition to partnership setup and management
- In this key technical leadership role, you will architect and build scalable services using TypeScript/React and Python/Django, guide major projects, drive our technical roadmap through RFCs, and mentor other engineers to elevate our standards for engineering excellence
- Lead complex, multi-squad projects through their full lifecycle to Own the Outcome, collaborating with product, design, and data teams to deliver high-quality and well-monitored solutions that impact millions
- Architect and build scalable services for mission-critical systems using modern technologies like TypeScript/React and Python/Django. This is how you will Make the Mission Matter: by shaping a technical strategy that directly supports our mission to improve mental health access
- Shape the architectural vision for the Platform team by championing our value to Iterate to Great, driving the future of our tech stack and engineering excellence through rigorous code reviews, thoughtful RFCs, clear documentation, and continuous process improvements
- Connect with Courage to drive impactful technical and business decisions, leading challenging cross-functional conversations with clarity and conviction
- Mentor engineers at all levels, fostering their growth and establishing yourself as a recognized technical leader within the organization
Our take
The world is facing a growing mental health crisis. In 2022, the US saw the proportion of the population with an acute anxiety, depression or other mental health need grow from 20% to 40%.
In 2021, Headspace and Ginger finalised a $3bn merger to form Headspace Health, an accessible mental health platform. It is determined to democratize mental healthcare, and its brands are already being used by over 100 million people and more than 4,000 enterprises including Starbucks, Adobe and Paramount.
There is clearly a need for virtual mental healthcare, and the market is growing increasingly crowded, with competitors including His & Hers Health. However, Headspace Health sets itself apart with its rapidly growing portfolio of services, added in part through strategic acquisitions such as that of AI health firm Sayana in 2022. It is now focusing on international expansion, offering its services directly to companies in the UK for the first time.
