Who you are
- The ideal candidate has 5–10 years of experience in fintech, financial services, or technology, with a proven track record of working cross-functionally in fast-paced environments
- Credit card experience is a strong plus
- J.D. and admission to at least one U.S. state bar in good standing (CA preferred)
- 5-10 years of legal experience, ideally with a mix of top law firm and in-house experience in fintech, financial services, or technology
- Enthusiasm for helping to build the foundation for a legal function at Imprint
- Experience advising on regulatory/compliance issues related to fintech, payments, consumer lending, or credit cards
- Familiarity with the sponsor bank model and related regulatory requirements
- Working knowledge of privacy and data security laws and their application to consumer financial products
- Strong drafting, negotiation, and communication skills with attention to detail
- Ability to work independently and thrive in a fast-paced, high-growth environment with a proactive, problem-solving mindset
- Team-oriented, entrepreneurial, and eager to take on diverse projects as part of a small but growing legal team
What the job involves
- Imprint is looking for a dynamic Associate General Counsel - Product to join our growing legal team as our second hire
- This role offers a unique opportunity to help build the legal function from the ground up and partner closely with product, compliance, engineering, and business teams
- You’ll serve as a trusted advisor on regulatory, privacy, data security, and compliance issues that impact our product offerings, with a particular focus on the sponsor bank model, credit cards, and other consumer credit products
- This is a hands-on role where you’ll not only guide the development of innovative financial products but also support general commercial and SaaS contracting
- This role will report to the Vice President of Legal and be based out of the San Francisco office (hybrid or full time in office)
- Advise product and engineering teams on regulatory, privacy, data security, and compliance issues affecting fintech products
- Partner with product managers and business leaders to design innovative, compliant, and consumer-friendly experiences
- Support the structuring and implementation of products offered through sponsor bank relationships by advocating for Imprint’s product direction with partner banks
- Draft, review, and negotiate a variety of commercial agreements, including SaaS, vendor, and partnership contracts
- Monitor legal and regulatory developments in consumer finance, payments, privacy, and data security, and translate them into practical guidance for internal stakeholders
- Develop scalable legal processes and frameworks to support a rapidly growing business
- Collaborate with compliance, risk, and operations teams to ensure products align with applicable laws and industry best practices
- Contribute to building the foundation of the legal function, with the opportunity to shape culture, tools, and strategy
Our take
These days, all sorts of cards abound, from virtual cards to co-branded credit cards. Imprint aims to stand out in the increasingly crowded space by partnering with businesses to provide branded rewards cards for customers.
While there has been an increase in the number of companies offering branded financial products to reduce costs, Imprint sees its card programs as offering a new platform for deepening customer relationships: less of the nastiness of credit and a much greater focus on rewards.
The startup is focusing on refining its embedded finance solution to fulfil its vision of an Apple-pay like experience for merchants and consumers.
Imprint will hope that its lightweight service, fit for smaller customers like hotel chains, will allow it to compete with the major venture-backed players in the space like Cardless, Apto and Alviere. And its $75M in venture capital raised in 2023 is going some way towards achieving these aims.
