Role
Who you are
- 5+ years of experience in Public Relations,Communications
- Bachelor's Degree in Communications, Public Relations, English, or a related field
- You respond to pressure or crisis situations while maintaining a calm presence
- You run multiple work streams simultaneously
- You're able to focus and sculpt communications (written, verbal) to best meet our needs
- You have established media contacts and relationships
- You are familiar with anime, pop culture and/or current entertainment
What the job involves
- We're looking for a Senior Publicist for Streaming Content & Awards for a contract role
- You will play a crucial role in promoting our SVOD content to consumers, the press, the entertainment industry, and our licensors
- Reporting to our Director of Publicity, Streaming Content & Awards, you will be instrumental in positioning anime content as a key player in the competitive streaming landscape
- You will collaborate with global teams for both strategy development and hands-on execution, leading press and media relations in key markets including the United States, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand
- Help create press materials related to SVOD content, including press releases, briefing documents, PR plans, and pitches
- Engage with media outlets covering entertainment, anime, and related genres to pitch unique story ideas
- Collaborate on major streaming premieres and seasonal launches, contributing to creative campaigns that enhance platform and content visibility
- Participate in seasonal announcements, highlights, trend stories, and targeted pitches
- Help manage processes for announcements, interviews, and distribution of photo and video assets
- Contribute to best practice development with licensors for communications and publicity activities
- Support efforts to promote Crunchyroll's dubbing initiatives and voice talent publicity
- Contribute to the strategy for TV and streaming-related awards campaigns
- Collaborate with the Events team on public events and cultural moments to maximize brand and content exposure
- Help prepare talent for interviews, including drafting talking points and providing coaching
- Work with a team and external agencies, aligning with PR colleagues in the US and globally
- Monitor press coverage

In recent decades, anime - encompassing Japanese, Korean, and Chinese animation 0 has transitioned from a niche interest to a formidable industry, boasting a global market worth approximately $30B. Despite this growth, distribution has historically posed challenges, with series and films often reaching overseas audiences through disparate channels, if at all. Crunchyroll emerged to address this issue by consolidating the largest collection of anime into a single streaming service.
Sony's acquisition of Crunchyroll in 2021 for $1.75B expanded the platform's reach, integrating Sony's extensive animation library into its offerings. this move also positioned Crunchyroll for heightened competition against streaming giant Netflix, known for its substantial investments in anime production and acquisition. Currently, Crunchyroll maintains an unrivaled library of anime content, boasting over 44,000 episodes that have attracted over 0M paying subscribers.
While Crunchyroll initially offered a free, ad-supported tier to its vast community, it appears poised to phase out this option, transitioning to a subscription-based model for all new series. Despite this shift, the platform has implemented a global reduction in fees to stimulate subscription uptake. The success of this strategy remains to be seen, but past experiences with companies like Hulu suggest that it may drive subscription growth and mitigate piracy
