Role
Who you are
- Deep expertise in payments, e-commerce, or fintech domains, with experience in checkout and payment gateways
- Strong understanding of payment processing flows, authorization, capture, refunds, and reconciliation processes
- Technical leadership experience with a modern tech stack, ideally including AWS, JavaScript/TypeScript, Golang, or other backend technologies
- You excel at people management, promoting inclusivity and psychological safety, with a proven ability to lead and develop teams
- You have a bachelor's degree in computer science, computer or electrical engineering, business informatics or equivalency in relevant work experience
- You are highly proactive, resourceful, and have a strong sense of ownership, with the ability to solve complex business problems through technology
- You have strong analytical skills, business acumen, and are an open-minded and creative team player that challenges directly while caring deeply
What the job involves
- We are seeking a talented and experienced Engineering Manager to lead the Payments team, which plays a crucial role in ensuring a seamless, secure, and high-performing checkout experience for our customers
- In this role, you will be responsible for overseeing the entire software development lifecycle, from ideation to deployment. You will work closely with Product Managers and cross-functional teams to deliver high-quality products that meet the end user’s needs
- You will lead an empowered team to design, build, and scale Emma’s technology platform, helping us become a global leader in sleep comfort products. Your work will directly impact our customers’ experiences and the quality of our offerings
- You will own the team’s delivery, driving predictable progress through proactive risk identification and mitigation, while ensuring clear, timely communication with stakeholders at every stage
- You will drive the technical roadmap for the payments domain, ensuring scalable, reliable, and future-proof architectures for checkout and payment services
- You will own key payment-related metrics, such as payment success rate, failure rate, authorization decline rate, chargeback rate
- You will ensure system reliability and incident management, proactively identifying, coordinating incidents and mitigating risks to minimize transaction failures and downtime
- You will work closely with senior and staff engineers to ensure the technical excellence of the architecture and software by actively participating in writing and reviewing design docs, pair programming, and code reviews
- You will coach, mentor, and support your team members in achieving their full potential, fostering a high-performance culture through clear roles, career pathing, and regular development feedback

Emma makes mattresses, bed frames and other sleep accessories that can be delivered right to your door. The company began in Frankfurt in 2013 at the beginning of a wave of similar companies emerging around Europe. It has since grown to operate in over 30 countries, and has become the world's most international direct to customer sleep brand.
The company owes this to its 'omnichannel strategy', selling both online and in store via retail partnerships, and it produces mattresses locally in each economy. With the launch of its retail-specific product assortment "Emma Select" and its pan-European partnership with the interior giant JYSK, Emma now collaborates with more than 200 different retail partners worldwide.
Emma's products continue to be awarded by reputable test institutes such as Stiftung Warentest in Germany and Which? (UK). It is aiming to strengthen both retail and marketplaces teams to anchor its expansion in Latin America as well as in the US. It will also be strengthening the product team and bringing yet more new sleep innovations to market.
