Role
Who you are
- If you understand the challenges of self-employment, such as forming entities, managing books, and filing taxes, and are excited to join a small, collaborative team, we’d love to hear from you
- CPA or Enrolled Agent, with 5+ years of hands-on experience working with S corporations
- 2+ years of relevant tax experience
- 5+ years preparing and reviewing Forms 1120, 1120S, and 1040
- Proven track record of signing off on tax returns
- Experience serving 10+ self-employed or small business clients (under $1M in revenue)
- Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to build trust and rapport with self-employed professionals across industries
- Tech-savvy and quick to learn and teach new tools
- Demonstrated ability to lead complex, cross-functional workstreams
- Proficient in UltraTax, GoSystems (or similar tax software), QuickBooks Online, Gusto, Salesforce, and G Suite
What the job involves
- As part of the Tax team, you’ll serve as both a trusted tax advisor and a skilled tax accountant for our valued customers
- You’ll manage your own portfolio, provide high-impact guidance, and play a key role in driving both customer satisfaction and business success
- You’ll also act as a vital bridge between tax leadership and junior team members, helping to share knowledge and elevate our collective expertise
- Understand our clients’ financial background, financial goals, help them identify optimization opportunities, help them make a decision on reasonable salary, train them on quarterly checks, quarterly estimates and how Collective works
- Minimal client facing responsibilities
- Prepare, review and help to sign off and file member’s personal and business returns
- Build and lead a team of emerging Tax professionals taking responsibility for their day to day tasks, success, and failure ensuring their continuous growth
- Mentor, train and provide feedback to junior tax staff on the team
- Effectively communicate updates or changes across the organization and partner with stakeholders
Our take
Collective is tapping into the quickly growing freelance and self employed workforce with a back office platform which provides full support for accounting, tax, book keeping and other financial admin, essentially removing the burden from the business owner entirely.
Having only launched in 2020, Collective didn’t take long to receive major backing from General Catalyst as well as Ashton Kutcher’s VC fund Sound Ventures. It’s put it to great use too, with an employee headcount now in the hundreds, showing just how fast the startup is growing.
Interestingly, Collective isn’t available for any and all subscribers. Rather, it only allows applicants to become members if Collective’s advisors know they can offer real value. It may seem a counter-intuitive move, but it keeps the company’s success rate high.
The company's latest 2023 funding round is being used to accelerate the implementation of AI across its operations as well as onboard the nearly 100,000 waitlisted businesses. it launched an AI accounting platform for one-person operations in 2024, exemplifying the savvy use of its funds.
