Role
Who you are
- Senior level of experience in an SRE role with an understanding of monitoring, troubleshooting, and disaster recovery
- Extensive experience in writing production-quality code (we use Go, Python
- Some Typescript for github actions CI/CD)
- Proficiency with infrastructure as code and/or configuration management (we use Terraform)
- Experience with managing monitoring dashboards using tools like Grafana and Prometheus to create actionable alerts
- Ability to ensure the system is running and in line with internal SLIs and SLOs
- Experience refining CI/CD processes to ensure new code is pushed to production in a reliable and efficient manner
- Ability to collaborate on creating a robust monitoring platform for our services and their underlying infrastructure, aiming to alert on symptoms and not outages
- Familiarity with best practices when creating and managing AWS resources (e.g. security groups, VPCs)
What the job involves
- Our SRE organization is responsible for empowering our developers with building tooling and utilities to allow developers to push features and new applications with confidence
- They also own our continuous build and deployment system, and the infrastructure for our environments
- They work with other engineers to ensure the system is working appropriately now and for the future by building out and evangelizing application and infrastructure instrumentation and observability
- The First 30 Days:
- Understand current cloud build and deployment process(overall SDLC)
- Deep dive into the architecture of the Flock system to understand how each component is interconnected
- Overview of Terraform/IAC
- Overview of ML workflows
- Overview of SRE team charter/purpose
- Active participation in a full sprint cycle with all ceremonies the SRE team utilizes to plan work
- The First 60 Days:
- Ability to perform the role with decreased need for guidance
- Ability to complete medium-sized tasks with little support
- Regularly assisting in the resolution of help-desk requests
- Regularly participates in the peer review process and meaningful technical discussions
- In-depth/complex understanding of various infrastructure/tooling components
- 90 Days & Beyond:
- Ability to perform the role with little guidance with transparency
- Comfortable picking up engineering tasks of larger size and more ambiguity
- Support ongoing efforts for our current themes and goals should be a top priority
- Converted 2-3 repos from Jenkins to GHA’s in support of the GHA migration
- Complete an Initial review and career planning deep dive session with your manager
- Proficiency with Infrastructure manipulation via tooling, IAC, pipelines/workflows, and manual operations along with understanding potential side effects/impact those changes have at scale/under load

Your recruiter will inform you of which assessment you will be assigned and ensure you are fully prepared for your big day
- The Panel: Learn more about the team, responsibilities, and workflows. You should be prepared to speak about past projects, how you collaborate and communicate with others, and how you live our values. Depending on the team and role you are interviewing for, you may meet with several teammates as well as cross-functional partners
- The Executive Review: A chance to meet an executive in your function and view Flock from a different lens. Be prepared to ask well-thought-out questions about the company, culture, and more
Our take
Public vehicle surveillance provides valuable insights to emergency services for the prevention of crime, but bringing information together to create leads is difficult. There's no standardised system for inter-city vehicle surveillance, and this makes it difficult for communities and law enforcement services to work together.
Flock Safety provides surveillance equipment that aims to improve the abilities of law enforcement and homeowner associations to communicate data with each other. The company focuses on vehicle surveillance, innovating on existing technology by using machine learning to categorise vehicles by color, license plate, state, and other data points.
Whilst automated surveillance equipment is used daily within federal police forces, Flock Safety builds technology systems that provide a means for smaller law enforcement agencies to quantify and share surveillance data easily. This data can then be automatically processed to help develop leads, a time-consuming process that would usually have to be completed manually.
