Comfortable working across the stack, on our Python (Flask) back-end hosted on AWS, as well as with our web-based front-end.
Excited by the idea of turning ideas into working software quickly, iterating based on feedback, and helping us get great products into the hands of educators without delay.

What the job involves

Designing and building a survey platform used by school leaders to gather insights from their staff
Developing a cutting-edge classroom simulator powered by large language models, to support teacher training and practice
Refining the onboarding experience to ensure new schools get value from Steplab from day one
Championing platform security, implementing best practices and proactively identifying areas for improvement
Building our front-end migration from Jinja2 templates to a modern React + TypeScript architecture
Collaborating closely with designers and engineers, taking ideas from concept through to production
Mentoring junior engineers, fostering growth and best practices across the team
Contributing to product strategy, helping steer the technical direction and long-term vision of Steplab

Steplab Co-founders Joshua Goodrich and Ben Abelman have a broad and extensive set of experiences in the education system, from both the teaching and the operational perspectives. So the education solution they’re cooking up together, developing and testing a professional learning platform and new approaches to school improvement, comes from hand-on experience of industry pitfalls.

Steplab is looking to harness instructional coaching and data-driven insights to improve the quality of teaching. It is an approach that draws on insights from top educational researchers.

The UK is going through something of a crisis in the teaching workforce, as many defect to less stressful and better remunerated adjacent positions. A platform, therefore, that can offer a succinct and effective way of improving the quality of instruction is likely to prove popular among short-staffed headteachers looking to harness tech to improve their educational provision.

🌴 28 days of paid leave, plus bank holidays | You’ll start with 28 days, increasing by 1 each year up to 33. We think everyone who works at Steplab should have plenty of time to recharge and enjoy life outside of work. We only ask that holidays are kept to around two weeks maximum at a time, and that you’re considerate of when others on your team are on holiday.
🏢 We have an office near Highbury & Islington station. We tend to come in 2-3 days per week, but we’re flexible if you want to come in more or less than that. We ask that everyone is available to come to London once per month for an all-hands meeting. We are open to fully-remote candidates, but will prioritise those amenable to hybrid working.
