Role
Who you are
- Pursuing a bachelors, masters, or doctoral degree in engineering, computer science, physics, mathematics, or related field
- Past evidence of strong analytical and systems-thinking skills with attention to detail
- Ability to understand and work within existing taxonomy efforts, including database structures and storage
- Strong communication skills - both verbal and written
- Experience driving a motorized vehicle on public roads in the US, in any capacity
Desirable
- Ability to apply systems engineering concepts of requirements, verification and validation
- Basic understanding of autonomous vehicle technology, especially sensors and perception and classification capabilities
- Familiarity with the capabilities and limitations of simulation
- Detailed understanding of driving rules/regulations and/or traffic engineering
- Ability to write code in Python and write basic data queries
- Experience with configuration management tools for requirements, documentation, and software
What the job involves
- As a Systems Engineering Intern for Scenario Taxonomy, you'll help make Nuro AI Driver safer and more reliable
- You'll work with experts in systems, robotics, data infrastructure, compliance, and safety to improve our validation process related to scenario specifications and test coverage
- You will be involved in specifying and validating the taxonomy that is used in development, V&V, and safety assessment
- Help specify and decompose the hierarchical scenario space into a scenario taxonomy for L4 autonomous vehicles
- Identify and design key features of the Scenario Taxonomy, taking into account system capabilities and stakeholder requirements
- Assess the Scenario Taxonomy against the system’s ODD for data correctness/accuracy, for sufficiency in identifying failure modes, and against standards and industry best practices
- Work closely with teams across Nuro including Systems V&V, Autonomy Development, Mapping, Data Infrastructure, and Operations
- This position is hybrid and requires 3 days a week in office, including Thursdays in our Mountain View, CA headquarters and the remaining 2 days in either Mountain View or our San Francisco, CA office

Without a passenger inside the vehicle, it has been able to sidestep some of the safety issues that have plagued other autonomous vehicle brands. Additionally, the company has landed several high-profile partners, including Uber, Walmart, Chipotle, and Kroger.
With home deliveries at an all-time high, many companies are looking for ways to get goods to customers’ homes as fast as possible. Low-cost, efficient services such as Nuro's offering are becoming increasingly attractive. The company is turning its focus to commercializing and scaling the production of its third-generation vehicle at a new facility in Southern Nevada as it hopes to expand its services across the US.
