Role
Who you are
- Can demonstrate an in-depth understanding of a range of user research methods and an understanding of modern trends in Web and app design
- Have approximately 2+ years experience conducting UX research, employing methods such as in-depth user interviews, contextual inquiry, journey mapping, participatory design, and usability testing
- Experience conducting research at different parts of the product development process, from discovery to delivery
- You are comfortable with the logistical challenges and workflows of recruiting for research
- You are a strong communicator and storyteller, with the ability to hold your own in a meeting and present research findings with a customer-centric perspective
- You are ambitious, meticulous, and able to manage multiple projects at a time
- Bonus: Experience with e-Commerce, SQL, Qualtrics, remote testing tools, or experiment design
What the job involves
- As a UX Researcher, your work will range from identifying initial opportunities, to refining the user experience, to analyzing the impact of our efforts and highlighting improvement areas
- You will work in rotations with a variety of teams and partners including product managers, designers, engineers, analysts, and marketers
- Reporting to a Senior Research Manager
- Partner with product managers, designers, engineers, analysts, and marketers to guide product development and refinement, drawing on expertise in user research and UX standards
- Independently define project scope and apply appropriate methodologies to manage a research "portfolio" of foundational and evaluative insights
- Conduct remote and on-site user research studies with Etsy buyers and sellers
- Work closely with other researchers and data analysts to develop broad approaches to meeting partner needs
- Share tangible findings and prioritized recommendations on a regular basis, to encourage marketplace health and drive Etsy’s business goals
- Manage third-party research vendors (e.g., research agencies, moderators) as necessary
- Promote proven user research methodologies across the company

Our take
Created as an alternative to more corporate eCommerce sites, Etsy is a peer-to-peer (P2P) website where users buy and sell handmade crafts, vintage items, art and photography. The online marketplace works similarly to Amazon and eBay, only with an emphasis on unique items rather than mass-produced merchandise.
Since its IPO in 2015, it has managed to hold its own in an increasingly competitive eCommerce industry, including from Amazon's handmade section that launched in 2015. Further, by providing sellers with ownership over pricing and branding, the site is attractive for those wanting to set up a business on an established platform.
However, the seller-side of Etsy is not without problems. A hike in transaction fees and the introduction of mandatory marketing fees for artists with high turnovers created significant discontent amongst sellers. Despite this, Etsy continues to connect artists and consumers, attracting shoppers with its message of extraordinary, handmade and affordable products.
