What the job involves
- As a Staff Software Engineer on the Seller Services team, you’ll be joining a team of software engineers, building features and systems that enable Etsy to deliver efficient, high-quality, and scalable support to our buyers and sellers, reaching millions of buyers and sellers globally
- The technology we build spans the full stack end to end; from user experience, to API design, backend service development, vendor integrations, and database design
- Depending on the needs of the business, our team may need to move up and down the stack, and in many cases collaborate with other teams to get to what needs to be done
- As a Staff Software Engineer, you will be helping to drive the technical direction and strategy of the team, working closely with engineering managers, senior engineers and cross functional partners to design and deliver large scale technical solutions
- You will ensure a high level of quality by leading by example, setting solid engineering standards and mentoring engineers at all levels
- This is a full-time position reporting to the Director of Engineering, CSS
- The Seller Services team is part of the Customer Support and Services department that is focused on making support delightful, helping our customers (both buyers and sellers) love Etsy, and turning them into brand advocates
- We provide support when customers have a great experience with Etsy and provide support when things go wrong - making it right
- This department’s focus is on developing and maintaining the platforms, tools, and systems necessary for delivering a best-in-class support experience for our ever-expanding group of buyers and sellers
- The Seller Services team is an established squad of experienced Etsy engineers
- The team drives an ambitious roadmap of projects that impact the Customer Support Experience and our customers within the Etsy Community
- Contribute at all levels; from front-end (HTML, CSS, JS, and Typescript/React), to API design and back-end (PHP, MySQL, BigQuery), and standalone supporting services running in containers
- Collaborate closely with engineering managers, engineers, product managers, data scientists, and machine learning engineers to design robust end-to-end solutions and incorporate industry trends that can drive business value
- Set technical direction for your teammates, as a tech lead
- Participate in code and design reviews and maintain high standards of code quality
- Mentor and guide junior and senior engineers
- Advocate for high standards; make quality-of-life improvements to the codebase; and help limit the growth of technical debt
- Work cross-functionally with various teams for technical alignment and dependency management

Our take
Created as an alternative to more corporate eCommerce sites, Etsy is a peer-to-peer (P2P) website where users buy and sell handmade crafts, vintage items, art, and photography. The online marketplace works similarly to Amazon and eBay, only with an emphasis on unique items rather than mass-produced merchandise.
Since its IPO in 2015, it has managed to hold its own in an increasingly competitive eCommerce industry, including from Amazon's handmade section that launched in 2015. Further, by providing sellers with ownership over pricing and branding, the site is attractive for those wanting to set up a business on an established platform.
However, the seller-side of Etsy is not without problems. The recent hike in transaction fees and the introduction of mandatory marketing fees for artists with high turnovers has created significant discontent amongst sellers. Etsy must reconcile these issues to ensure artists continue to operate on the same scale within the platform. It plans to attract shoppers with its message of extraordinary, handmade and affordable products.
