Role
Who you are
- 5+ years of production-level Python software engineering experience, ideally in SDK development
- Proven experience building or maintaining open-source libraries or SDKs, with strong community engagement
- Deep understanding of Python ecosystem tools
- Track record of leading technical projects and mentoring engineers
- Excellent communication skills and comfort collaborating across teams (product, design, ML, open-source contributors)
Desirable
- Experience with real-time processing systems, low-latency streaming, or WebRTC
- Contributions to voice/video open-source projects or AI model repositories
- Experience with Go (all of Stream’s APIs use Go, so it helps when interacting with other teams)
What the job involves
- We’re seeking a Staff Python Engineer to lead the development of our open-source video/voice AI Python library
- In this high-impact role, you’ll architect, build, and maintain a powerful toolkit for developers integrating voice and video AI into their products
- You’ll be a key technical leader—shaping the direction of the library, collaborating with cross-functional teams, and engaging with the open-source community
- Architect, develop, and maintain our open-source video/voice AI Python SDK and library, from API design to performance tuning
- Ensure the library is well-documented, thoroughly tested, and easy for developers to adopt and extend
- Drive code quality through robust testing, benchmarking, and automation
- Contribute to and engage with the open-source community: triage issues, review contributions, and shape the roadmap through feedback
- Collaborate cross-functionally with product, UX/design, and other engineering teams to align on developer workflows and UX
- Mentor engineers, establish best practices, and advocate for strong Pythonic design and high engineering standards

Every day, people all over the world communicate via in-app chats. However, chat and UX tools can take months to build and years to perfect. Stream solves this problem by allowing developers to build chat and activity streams into apps quickly and without hassle.
Having started out building APIs for activity feeds, Stream quickly moved into the lucrative chat market. Its customers now include household names such as Unilever, NBC Sports, and TaskRabbit, and it has seen funding from both big-name firms and startup CEOs - a clear indication of the company's broad appeal.
The company has lately been focussed on further developing its in-house technology, in order to fuel its continued growth in the coming years. It continues to enrich its Activity Feed, Chat SDK and 2022-released AI-based Moderation products, as well as developing Live Video capabilities, which it states clients have been interested in for some time.
