Who you are

Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or a related field
3+ years of experience in systems programming, embedded systems, or infrastructure development
Strong proficiency in languages like C, C++, or Rust for low-level programming
Deep understanding of hardware communication protocols and peripheral interfaces
Experience developing and debugging software that interacts directly with custom or commercial hardware
Familiarity with operating system internals, memory management, and multi-threading
Comfortable working in Linux-based development environments, including build systems and shell scripting

What the job involves

We are looking for a Software Infrastructure Engineer to help build and maintain the foundational software that interfaces directly with hardware platforms
In this role, you will develop core frameworks and communication layers that enable seamless interaction between software applications and hardware components
You’ll work closely with hardware and firmware teams to ensure reliability and performance
Design and implement robust software interfaces and frameworks that communicate directly with hardware
Develop low-level libraries and abstractions for hardware communication protocols (e.g., I2C, SPI, UART)
Collaborate with hardware, firmware, and embedded teams to define and refine interface specifications
Build infrastructure to support reliable hardware interaction across different platforms and environments
Debug complex issues that span hardware, drivers, and higher-level software layers
Ensure efficient and deterministic performance in hardware-software communication
Write clean, maintainable code and provide clear documentation of interfaces and architecture
Participate in architectural design reviews and contribute to the evolution of infrastructure systems

Our take

Advances in artificial intelligence apps, combined with a global chip shortage, are strong tailwinds for chip processor Tenstorrent. The semi-conducter developer is designing specialized chips for running artificial intelligence applications, building chips for what it calls "software 2.0".

The company’s unique approach is to build for this future software, which it believes will be written at a higher level. Combining this with conditional computing, Tenstorrent supports a scalable distributed network approach that is analogous to a human brain.

While the market for specialised AI hardware is destined to be gigantic, the company has to compete with a plethora of hopeful startups (as well as major tech companies like NVIDIA and Qualcomm). That said, Tenstorrent boasts an excellent trajectory so far, with its latest moves including unveiling its high-end Wormhole AI processors, and a partnership with LG which will see the development of chips for "Affectionate Intelligence".
