Role
Who you are
- 3+ years of professional experience in economics, analytics, or data science (e.g. in tech, consulting, government, etc)
- Proficiency with empirical econometrics toolkit (experimentation; methods for causal inference such as IV; panel data methods; discrete models; etc)
- Proficiency with SQL
- Proficiency with R or Python, including strong data visualization skills
- Strong communication skills: able to communicate complex methods in intuitive and simple ways, easily able to adapt messaging to fit the audience, able to identify/highlight key information
- Ability to build strong relationships cross-functionally and with senior leadership
- Proficiency with data wrangling and organizing data for different models or analyses; and organized workflows and project management skills
What the job involves
- Core Data Science (Core DS) accelerates Thumbtack’s success through scalable, scientific decision-making. We drive impact across the business by building shared programs and tools that improve how teams measure outcomes and make decisions, and by leading rigorous analysis on cross-cutting, company-wide questions
- As a member of Core DS, you will lead high-impact work end-to-end, from identifying opportunities and structuring the approach, to executing rigorous analysis and communicating to stakeholders.
- You will collaborate closely with other data scientists and cross-functional partners, deliver insights that inform strategy and execution, and contribute to shared capabilities that strengthen data-driven decision-making across Thumbtack.
- As a senior contributor, you may also mentor others and help shape the team’s scientific culture through guidance and training
- Identify, scope, and deliver high-impact projects end-to-end, leveraging the right resources and partners
- Proactively coordinate and collaborate with stakeholders to maximize the impact and adoption of your work
- Clearly communicate insights and business implications to audiences ranging from technical to executive, using the right level of complexity and narrative to influence decisions and roadmaps
- Develop frameworks and measurement approaches that make complex marketplace and product questions intuitive and actionable
- Apply rigorous analytical and causal inference methods (e.g., experimentation, quasi-experimental designs, forecasting/measurement) balancing rigor with practical constraints (time, complexity, marginal value)
- Own and improve shared decision-making programs and infrastructure, such as experimentation practices, market-based testing, and impact measurement
- Design, build, and maintain shared DS tooling and reusable assets (e.g., notebooks, libraries, training, standardized metrics, and key models that empower other teams)
- Mentor other scientists/analysts and lead trainings/courses to raise the bar for scientific decision-making across the company

Instead of simply searching for a professional, users provide ThumbTack with details of the job they need completing and the professionals then pitch their services to the potential customer using credits. ThumbTack makes its money by charging the professional for these credits.
It positions itself as something a little different in a saturated local services space that is dominated by companies like Angie’s List, TaskRabbit, Yelp, eBay, and Amazon. It also focuses on a broad range of professionals, from traditional home services like electricians and painters to photographers, personal trainers, and birthday party magicians.
The COVID-19 pandemic saw a boost in business for ThumbTack as more people stayed at home and made changes to their properties, increasing the demand for home professionals. In fact, after 2019, the company doubled in value to $3.2 billion with its 2021 raise. Since its 2024 funding round, its updated app has 30 new features, and the company is partnering with the likes of trade-powering platform and Unicorn ServiceTitan, indicating Thumbtack's sustained sway in the market.
