Who you are
- 2+ years of experience in People, Talent, Operations, or fast-paced environments where you built or owned people-related processes (prioritising mindset and skill fit over a specific HR pedigree)
- A deeply people-centric yet business-savvy personality - charismatic, empathetic, proactive, and able to read the room
- A hands-on mentality - you thrive in imperfect, fast-changing, early-stage environments and can build structure where needed
- Fluency in German & English

What the job involves
- Collaborate closely with the leadership team to build Root’s People function from scratch
- You will drive and eventually own the programs, culture, and operational foundations that enable every team member to thrive
- As our first dedicated People Lead, you will design and own the systems that ensure Root remains a high-performing, human-centered organization as we scale across Europe
- Own and continuously refine the full OKR cycle across the company, ensuring alignment, clarity, and accountability at all levels
- Shape and maintain consistent feedback cycles, compensation structures, career paths, and progression frameworks to support equitable growth and retention
- Act as a trusted people partner for all staff members, putting in place feedback mechanisms that help improve and shape our company culture
- Run full-cycle recruitment across key roles, ensuring an exceptional candidate experience and strong alignment with Root’s culture and mission
- Establish scalable hiring processes, scorecards, and employer branding initiatives to attract top talent
- Partner closely with hiring managers to forecast hiring needs and design effective org structures
- Manage all People Ops workflows end-to-end, including contracts, onboarding/offboarding, HR systems (e.g., Personio), and compliance
- Ensure Root’s People operations are fast, reliable, and legally sound as we scale across multiple European markets
- Use data and People analytics to inform strategic decisions and improve processes
Our take
Food chains are responsible for anywhere between 20% and 30% of global greenhouse gas emissions, and it’s something businesses can’t sweep under the rug any longer. Tightening regulations require that businesses disclose their climate performance, and stakeholders and customers are paying close attention. Bad climate practices are increasingly bad for business, and Root Global is looking to help companies keep their performance up.
The Root software platform is designed to help food and beverage companies shoot for a zero-carbon future, by offering what Root hopes will become an industry-wide carbon operating system. Essentially, a database providing full life-cycle carbon emission data so businesses can make climate practise decisions based on accurate, comprehensive data - instead of the current system of upstream and downstream estimates.
This could prove a highly valuable proposition. Increasingly large numbers of companies are setting science-based climate targets, but research suggests the majority of these are distant, imprecise, or lack actionable road maps to get there. So, solid carbon accounting software is in urgent demand, and if Root, off the back of its 2024 seed funding, can build out the client base necessary for industry-wide coverage, it stands to make a substantial impact.
