Role
Who you are
- Ladder is hiring a Corporate Counsel who is passionate about commercial contracting (both inbound and outbound), enjoys the thrill of the deal while working towards a common goal and is a people-person
- This role is designed for someone who thrives by collaborating closely with cross-functional stakeholders to solve problems and appropriately assess risk
- The successful candidate is a clear communicator with sound judgment as well as proven experience effectively providing legal advice and negotiating with sophisticated counterparties in a fast-paced environment
- JD and membership in at least one state bar
- 3+ years of relevant firm and/or in-house legal experience
- Demonstrated sound judgment, negotiation and analytical skills
- Ability to find creative solutions and balance legal risk with business objectives
- Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills
- Experience learning new areas of law
- Team-player willing to take on any project that comes up
- Interpreting and complying with regulations in a variety of jurisdictions experience a plus
- Prior experience in or knowledge of insurance regulatory law a plus
What the job involves
- The ideal candidate is ready, willing and able to support other functions within our lean but mighty legal team including assisting our product and engineering teams, privacy, IP, and regulatory matters
- Support Ladder’s commercial legal function by negotiating contracts (both inbound and outbound) with our commercial partners to accelerate the growth of our business
- Advise on a broad range of legal issues including product, CX, regulatory, IP, and data privacy and security
- Support scaling projects that directly impact the growth of the commercial legal function
- Draft and negotiate commercial agreements, templates, nondisclosure agreements, terms of use, and other key legal documents
- Collaborate with partners, marketing, product, finance and additional stakeholders on key initiatives
- Support and/or manage various legal matters as they arise

Ladder is a life insurance company whose primary aim is to simplify the process of acquiring life insurance. In the past, getting coverage for life insurance has been a lengthy and time-consuming affair, but with Ladder, applicants can answer a few questions and sign up on their phones.
Jamie, the CEO and Co-Founder, felt the life-changing impact of life insurance on his own family when he lost his father at a young age before struggling to get life insurance policies for himself as an adult.
The market for life insurance in the US alone is worth over $128 billion, and Ladder faces stiff competition from Haven Life, a subsidiary of insurance giant MassMutual. Ladder will face stiff competition when traditional insurers undergo the digital transformation needed to join Ladder in offering five-minute life insurance policies via smartphone.
