Role
Who you are
- 5+ years of experience in firmware development and embedded systems engineering
- Strong system-level thinking and ability to bridge hardware, firmware, and software components
- Experience working with wireless and IoT technologies
- Previous experience specifying and managing contractor deliverables
Desirable
- Experience with ARM embedded systems and higher-level software stacks
- Familiarity with LoraWan and BLE
- Familiarity with battery-powered devices
- Knowledge of security best practices in embedded systems
- Experience with agile development methodologies
- Compliance and type approvals for a Global market (CE, UKCA, FCC, IC, etc)
What the job involves
- We are seeking a Senior Systems Engineer with deep expertise in firmware development and embedded systems to join our team
- In this role, you will define and specify interfaces between low-power embedded devices and cloud resources, ensuring seamless integration and optimal performance
- You will also play a critical role in managing contractors, ensuring project timelines, quality, and technical alignment
- This is an exciting opportunity to work on cutting-edge technology and drive system-level decisions in a fast-paced, innovative environment
- Outcomes in the first 3 months
- You'll have picked up the design and test on an active, high priority program (< month 1)
- You'll be supporting early stage OTS (off-the-shelf) and JDM (joint-development-model) programs. (~ month 2)
- Define and specify interfaces and communication protocols between low-power embedded devices and converged platforms
- Design and review firmware architectures, ensuring efficiency, scalability, and maintainability
- Collaborate with hardware, software, and cloud teams to ensure seamless system integration
- Develop and maintain technical documentation, including system specifications, interface definitions, and design guidelines
- Evaluate, select, and manage contractors for hardware development
- Ensure contractor deliverables meet quality, schedule, and performance requirements
- Lead technical reviews, troubleshoot complex system issues, and drive resolution across teams
- Stay up to date with industry trends, best practices, and emerging technologies in embedded systems and firmware development

Converge’s immediate focus has been to help civil engineers on construction sites better monitor concrete strength. Since its founding, Converge has deployed thousands of sensors across the UK, helping hundreds of engineers do their job more efficiently, and building deep insight and expertise in the construction industry by connecting the physical environment.
Construction work involving concrete typically requires manual monitoring, lab tests, waiting games and over-pouring. It’s inefficient, expensive and damaging to the environment. Converge’s flagship product helps to avoid all this.
It is able to use the data collected from its portfolio of projects to predict future concrete behaviour. London City Airport was the first commercial project that combined data including temperature readings from the concrete with local weather forecasts, to give a prediction of when the concrete will reach strength.
Converge's ambition is to reduce average cement content in concrete by 15%, estimating a 26 megaton carbon emissions reduction per year by 2030. It is currently expanding its suite of modules to include the optimisation of construction logistics and structural health.
