Who you are
- This role is ideal for someone with several years of experience who’s ready to step up and take on more ownership, while still honing their technical depth and leadership skills
- 3–7 years of professional software engineering experience, ideally in a full-stack or backend-focused role
- Proficiency in one or more object-oriented languages (Ruby, Python, etc.) and familiarity with modern frontend frameworks (React preferred)
- Strong understanding of web application architecture, API design, and database systems
- Experience working in Agile teams and collaborating with cross-functional partners

What the job involves
- Avant is looking for a Software Engineer III to build and scale critical systems that power our products and deliver real value to our customers
- This is a mid-senior level role for engineers who are confident tackling complex problems, making thoughtful implementation decisions, and driving features to completion with autonomy
- You’ll work across the stack and collaborate closely with product, design, and engineering peers to ship high-quality software in a fast-moving environment
- Lead the design and development of medium to large features across the full stack, backend services, APIs, and web UIs
- Own delivery of features end-to-end, including architecture, testing, deployment, and monitoring
- Make key technical implementation decisions focusing on quality, maintainability, and performance
- Navigate and contribute across multiple layers of the tech stack to solve complex, cross-cutting problems
- Propose improvements to code quality, development practices, and system architecture
- Collaborate regularly with product managers, designers, and engineers to clarify requirements and align solutions
- Contribute to Agile ceremonies as a core member of a Scrum team, including backlog refinement, sprint planning, and retrospectives
- Provide mentorship to engineers through brown bags, code reviews, pairing, and knowledge sharing
- Work independently with limited oversight, you’re given the “what” and trusted to own the “how”

Our take
Many Americans with below average credit scores are caught in a bind: they're unable to improve their score, and simultaneously cannot access traditional loans. Avant's alternative is to offer credit options that are powered by machine learning and based upon a large database that helps to manage risk.
For its users, the company offers a quick credit decision and speedy access to any allotted funds. It has issued over $8 billion in loans to date, and has also expanded its business through the acquisitions of ReadyForZero in 2015 and Zero Financial in 2021.
This expansion has enabled Avant to reach towards its goal of offering a whole suite of products in a single platform, such as loans, credit cards, and deposits. Although there are many FinTechs looking at ways to remove the barriers that people with low credit scores face when trying to take out loans, this expansion to banking products should help Avant to stand out.
