Company mission

We’re on a mission. And it’s money without borders. Instant, convenient, transparent and — eventually — free.

Role

Who you are

  • Track record of leading, coaching and mentoring driven and high performing teams
  • A strong product mindset and passion for UX – you prioritise work with customers in mind and make data-driven decisions to fix customer pain-points
  • Great communication skills and the ability to articulate complex, technical concepts to non-technical audiences
  • Experience building and designing scalable and performant systems that handle large amounts of traffic - ideally using React based frontend applications, Javascript / Typescript
  • Ability to break down complex projects into incremental milestones that deliver customer value
  • Familiarity working with Content Management Systems, and concepts such as headless CMS,
  • Knowledge of Java, Spring Boot backend technologies, event-driven microservices architectures, Domain Driven Design

What the job involves

  • We are looking for a talented Engineering Lead to join our Organic Growth team
  • Organic Growth is responsible for building products that will make customer acquisition eventually free. We do that by building systems that allow us to build a large number of SEO-optimised pages at scale, while making sure that the quality of these pages stays high. This is accomplished through maintaining and improving internal content management systems, as well as through integration with 3rd party data providers
  • Our team helps tell Wise’s story to more than 30 million visitors a month - and as the lead of the team, you’ll drive how to reach and convince an even wider audience in a scalable and effective way
  • As the team’s work is more often on frontend than backend, we’re looking for a lead who has web frontend expertise - though experience across both sides of the stack is preferred
  • Collaborate with product, design, SEO and other teams across the company to deliver impactful outcomes as a team,
  • Be responsible for the overall health and productivity of the engineers within your team - and help them grow to be their best selves,
  • Own the availability and scalability of our logged-out marketing pages, and how we build them going forward,
  • Provide feedback on technical design decisions and approach, and help the team make data-driven decisions,
  • Have an overview of what’s happening within the broader Onboarding space, and thinking about engineering as a whole,
  • Understand the teams’ systems deeply enough to be hands on, when needed

Our take

Wise started when the two founders realised they would be better off trading Estonian kroons for British pounds (and vice versa) between themselves rather than going through banks. That was back in 2011, and they've since grown Wise into one of Europe's most successful tech businesses, exchanging billions of currency every month.

Wise rapidly grew by solving a significant problem for customers, who lost too much money to banks when exchanging currency. They've attracted investment from some of the best investors in the world, from Andreesen Horowitz to Index Ventures and even Richard Branson.

The challenge for Wise will be maintaining their edge and brand power in a market that's becoming increasingly crowded with new entrants (like Revolut and Monzo) and incumbents (traditional banks) trying to catch up. To do so, the company is ramping up its digital and marketing strategies, as well as pushing for further development of its existing products.
