Who you are
- 5-10 years experience in a product management role focused on consumer growth or internal tooling, with demonstrated success leading a team to meet specific KPIs (e.g., conversion improvements, efficiency gains, revenue)
- Strong experimentation skills, including hypothesis generation, A / B testing, and results analysis
- Ability to build relationships and effectively collaborate with all levels of the organization, from C-level to individual contributors
- Ability to manage and influence through persuasion, negotiation, and consensus building
Desirable
- Experience building consumer products for technology companies in highly regulated industries (financial services, healthcare, etc.)
- Proven track record of building and scaling multi-product ecosystems or marketplaces in a B2C environment
- Strong customer-centric mindset with the ability to translate customer insights into actionable product features and enhancements
What the job involves
- Upstart’s Onboarding Experience team is dedicated to creating a seamless loan application process that allows customers to quickly and easily complete all steps required to fund their loan
- By building exceptional, customer-centric experiences for both Upstart borrowers and internal Operations teams, this team plays a crucial role in making Upstart the premier destination for consumer credit
- This team focuses on our flagship product, Personal Loans, and directly impacts our growth in this business by reducing friction for applicants and improving the efficiency of our operations
- As the Senior Product Manager, Onboarding Experience at Upstart, you will own the strategy and execution for the Onboarding Experience team, focusing on reducing borrower wait time throughout the application process for Upstart’s flagship personal loans product
- You’ll collaborate with cross-functional teams to drive both large-scale initiatives and smaller, data-driven experiments that optimize customer and business outcomes
- You’ll lead our efforts to uplevel both internal Operations tooling and borrower-facing user experiences in order to shorten application times, simplify our processes, and grow the business
- Develop and execute strategies to drive faster and more efficient borrower onboarding, focusing on Upstart’s personal loan product
- Establish and track success metrics to assess the impact of product initiatives, ensuring continuous optimization and improved outcomes
- Make smart trade-offs to inform the ongoing product roadmap, prioritizing the features with the highest ROI and experimenting when necessary
- Collaborate closely with product managers, engineering, analytics, design, operations, risk, and marketing to align goals and streamline processes, ensuring cross-functional coordination and successful delivery of initiatives
- Leverage data-driven insights to make informed product decisions, identifying opportunities for optimization and testing hypotheses to improve key metrics
- Deeply understand the customer, ensuring the borrower experience is intuitive, seamless, and meets evolving customer needs
Our take
Business startups across the world usually seek out funding, but this is often difficult for companies led by millenials. Millennial entrepreneurs with an excellent track record in business are increasingly requiring access to these loans, but their lack of credit history results in proposals frequently being declined.
Upstart provides loans that are aimed towards the target audience of millennials with entrepreneurial intentions, offering low interest rates that average at 12%. The company claims these rates are 10% lower than traditional lenders, and the service aims towards ensuring that the client is subject to no further fees (such as prepayment penalties).
Upstart claims that its unique selling point lies in the fact that its loans are funded the day after approval. Whilst the service focuses on personal loans for business, the company has also expanded to offer loans for car refinancing. Over 2022 and 23, Upstart's stocks fell dramatically and an investigation was undertaken by a law firm representing the company's long-term investors over alleged security law violations by its board of directors. However, the end of 2023 saw a 20% stock value rise for Upstart after its partnership with Mutual Security Credit Union led to a rise in customers, indicating that it is on the up after a difficult two years.
