Who you are
- J.D. from an accredited law school and licensed to practice law in at least one state
- 4+ years of professional experience at both a top law firm and in-house at a growth stage financial services company
- Experience creating and drafting policies, procedures, and control documents
- Excellent communication and collaboration skills with the ability to work cross-functionally at all levels of the organization
- Strong organizational skills and the ability to drive complex projects to completion
- Demonstrated ability to develop solutions to complex legal matters without losing sight of business objectives
- Working knowledge of at least some of the mortgage regulatory landscape strongly preferred (including GLBA, RESPA, HMDA, ECOA, FDCPA, TCPA, TILA, state mortgage laws)
What the job involves
- The Legal, Risk, and Compliance (LRC) department at Valon is responsible for interpreting and advising our company on the various legal, regulatory, and contractual provisions that impact our business
- Given how heavily regulated the mortgage industry is, compliance and risk management sit at the very core of our business
- The team partners closely with our product, engineering, operations, and finance teams to provide legal and compliance expertise and frameworks that inform and drive business decisions
- We are looking to add the first Product Counsel to our Legal, Risk, and Compliance team
- In this role, you will be responsible for handling legal and compliance matters and advising the business, with a focus on product and engineering, as we rapidly scale our loan portfolio and build the technology platform that will continue to transform the mortgage industry
- You are excited to roll up your sleeves and dive into the weeds, partnering closely with cross-functional stakeholders to drive product innovation
- You have excellent organizational and people skills, and thrive in a fast-paced, dynamic environment; and
- You are a self-starter with a bias for action and proactive with a strong sense of ownership
- Proactively provide legal and regulatory guidance to product development teams to enable them to launch innovative and compliant products
- Anticipate emerging regulatory issues across Valon’s product surface areas and develop solutions in close partnership with other business units
- Create, maintain and elevate Valon’s policies, playbooks, and processes to enable us to continue scaling rapidly
- Draft, review, and negotiate a broad range of vendor agreements to support Valon’s evolving business, including terms of use, master services agreements, statements of work, technology licensing agreements, partnership agreements, payment network/association agreements, and financial institution partnership
Our take
The mortgage servicing market is huge but surprisingly outdated. In the US alone, it covers roughly $13T in mortgages, yet many servicers still use legacy systems and manual processes to manage payments, compliance and customer support. Because mortgage servicing involves complex regulations and many exceptions, these older systems can be inefficient and costly to run, creating a strong opportunity for modern technology to improve how the industry operates.
Valon is trying to modernize this space with ValonOS, an AI-native operating system built specifically for mortgage servicing. The platform doesn't just store loan data, it also captures the rules and workflows behind servicing decisions. This allows companies to automate routine processes, improve visibility into operations, and manage compliance more easily. To prove the system works, Valon has also built and run its own large mortgage servicing business on the platform.
The company has gained strong backing from major industry players too. Investor Rithm Capital Corp. plans to roll out Valon's technology to over 4M homeowners through Newrez, one of the largest US mortgage servicers. If this rollout succeed, it could demonstrate that modern, AI-driven systems can operate at industry scale and potentially reshape mortgage servicing.
