Who you are
- Qualified Accountant (ACA, ACCA, CIMA) with Accounting & Finance experience in a fast-paced environment
- 2 Years + PQE (or relevant experience in International Accounting)
- Experience in International Accounting and working with 3rd Party Accounting Providers
- Advanced Excel skills and hands-on exposure to accounting systems (NetSuite preferred)
- Ability to communicate effectively with both technical and non-technical colleagues
- Strong written and oral communication skills along with strong interpersonal skills and relationship building
- Strong organizational and planning skills with the ability to prioritize and manage workload involving multiple tasks, responsibilities and deadlines with follow-through and minimal supervision

What the job involves
- The Senior Accountant will play a vital role in Turnitin’s EMEA Accounting Team who have the responsibility to provide internal and external financial reporting for EMEA entities
- Internal reporting includes management reporting as part of the month end close, where this role will have exposure to all expenses
- External reporting includes the year end reporting, where this role will be a key contact for any audits and financial statement preparation
- The Senior Accountant will be expected to contribute to driving continued process improvements to help strengthen internal controls and increase efficiencies
- The Accounting team work closely with other teams in the Turnitin Financial team, including the Financial Planning & Analysis, Accounts Payable, Order To Cash, Tax, and Payroll teams. This position will report directly to the EMEA Accounting Manager
- Maintenance of general ledger and associated accounting of Turnitin’s EMEA Entities
- Preparation of monthly journal entries as part of the month end process, primarily covering payroll and accruals
- Support and review of journal entries relating to other expense postings, including fixed assets, prepayments, cash, intercompany, and accounts payable
- Preparation of detailed Variance Analysis reports for management review
- Support and review of monthly Balance Sheet Reconciliations and investigation of reconciling items
- Working with outsourced accounting providers for preparation of Statutory Accounts for Turnitin’s EMEA Entities
- Assisting in Year End Audits for Turnitin’s EMEA Entities
- Participation in the ongoing development/establishment of accounting policies and procedures
- Assist with support to internal customers including ad-hoc financial analysis, and special projects
- Working with Turnitin’s Tax Team to ensure deliverables of VAT and Corporate Tax Reporting
- Assist newly acquired entities with adoption of group internal controls and processes
- Assisting in Cash Management, including cash flow forecasting, and the setup of intercompany cash transfers
Our take
Turnitin has a global reputation for being one of the best plagiarism detection software's on the market. It’s well-earned, too. Besides simple paraphrasing plagiarism, its software also employs sophisticated techniques like identifying macro replacement and analysing metadata to weed out essay mill papers.
Academic plagiarism has become increasingly complex over the years, exacerbated in part by the COVID period of online schooling, and in part by a skyrocketing rise in computer literacy and plagiarism tricks. Software like Turnitin is therefore playing an increasingly crucial role in maintaining academic integrity. Additionally, it helps understaffed institutions ease the burden placed on a teaching workforce which are, in some regions, perilously close to collapse.
Turnitin is not without its issues, however. Some institutions lean too heavily on the software, and essay mills have begun using Turnitin software to prove product authenticity. Historically, Turnitin has neatly addressed these problems by releasing new or improved capabilities including Chat GPT screening updates in 2023. If it can continue to demonstrate remarkable competence and proactive development in this regard, Turnitin’s glowing reputation seems assured.
