Who you are
- 6+ years of professional iOS development experience
- Strong proficiency with Swift and the iOS architectural components and ecosystem
- 6+ years of building and shipping production iOS applications to the Apple App Store
- A talent for building consensus around technical decisions and guiding the team along evolving architecture patterns
- Track record of leading major architectural initiatives, migrations, or platform-level projects
- Experience mentoring engineers and raising the technical bar across teams
- Experience leveraging AI-powered development tools (such as Claude Code, GitHub Copilot, Cursor, or similar) to accelerate development
Desirable
- Experience with hybrid mobile architectures, WebView integration, JavaScript bridges, React, or React Native
- Experience with video streaming or real-time communication technologies
- Experience working on platform or infrastructure teams that support multiple product teams
What the job involves
- The Mobile Core team develops frameworks and tools that empower engineering teams across Twitch to build compelling mobile experiences
- In this role, you will directly contribute to creating and refining core features, such as Video Playback, while architecting strategic solutions for internal developers
- Twitch is evolving its mobile strategy from native-first to a hybrid approach that leverages React in WebViews alongside native iOS capabilities
- You'll work on high-impact initiatives including our hybrid web-to-mobile platform, performance optimization at scale, automated testing infrastructure, and developer tooling that accelerates velocity across the organization
- You will report to the Senior Engineering Manager for Mobile Core iOS and can work from either our Seattle, Irvine, San Francisco or our New York City offices
- Own and drive the technical strategy for foundational iOS components, native video playback infrastructure, and hybrid (React in WebView) frameworks
- Architect and build robust WebView infrastructure and bridges that enable seamless integration between React-based web content and native iOS functionality
- Lead performance optimization efforts for platform components used by millions of daily active users, establishing benchmarks and best practices
- Provide technical leadership and mentorship to iOS engineers across multiple product teams and within Mobile Core, including onboarding and growing L4/L5 engineers
- Drive cross-organizational architectural decisions that balance developer velocity, app performance, and maintainability, representing Mobile Core's technical perspective in org-wide discussions
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to establish and maintain development standards for hybrid mobile applications, influencing adoption across the mobile engineering organization
Our take
Twitch is the world's leading video platform for gamers, allowing users to livestream gaming sessions and curate a dedicated community for their content. By dedicating the platform to gaming alone, it has amassed a loyal following of fans, and been able to launch its Partner Program where streamers can monetize their livestreams, incorporate corporate partnerships, and even attend TwitchCon, a convention where dedicated gamers can socialize.
Twitch's acquisition by Amazon in 2014 saw its viewers double in a year, bringing the platform to a wider audience. However, with YouTube streaming popularity on the rise, it has big competition to contend with, as some popular streamers prefer going live on the video giant. Interestingly, a recent move by the platform was to enable its partner streamers to make live content on other platforms - previously inhibited by its exclusivity clause - which may combat the possibility of losing streamers permanently to YouTube.
In 2022, Twitch had to contend with backlash for its proposal to cut creator income by reducing their cut of subscription earnings. However, with the plan only affecting a minute number of creators, the controversy appears to have died down. Needless to say, Twitch is for now entirely comfortable in the market - with possible plans to extend past gaming bringing the chance to generate more popularity yet.
