Role
Who you are
- An experienced manager, with demonstrable experience of developing and leading high performing teams. Experienced in supporting the professional development of direct reports, providing guidance, feedback and opportunities for growth, while also fostering a culture of accountability
- A subject matter expert in biomedical data science, who maintains a deep understanding of the evolving technical and industry landscape. Experience in therapeutic antibody discovery is preferred
- An implementation pioneer whose individual work consistently sets the standard for rigorous data science, including high quality code, optimal use of compute infrastructure, and clear data visualisations
- A collaborator who builds and maintains strong relationships with cross-functional teams and senior management, fostering a collaborative and inclusive environment that values diverse perspectives and expertise
- Advanced education (MS or PhD) in a relevant domain (e.g. biomedical data science, biostatistics) plus significant industry experience
- An ability to be in the office a minimum of 3 days per week
What the job involves
- As a Principal Data Scientist at LabGenius, you will be a key individual contributor and manager of a team of talented data scientists reporting into the VP of Computational Sciences & Engineering
- Our Data Science and Machine Learning team pushes the boundaries of therapeutic antibody optimisation by integrating novel DS/ML tools with our leading experimental laboratory
- We oversee the design and optimisation of both monovalent VHHs and multivalent T-cell engagers, including the analyses of experimental data and subsequent ML modelling
- At LabGenius, these models allow us to design molecules with previously unexplored therapeutic potential
- Manage a team of data scientists, providing leadership, direction, and mentorship to ensure continuous growth and development. You will help team members enhance their technical skills, stay updated on the latest advancements in data science, and foster a culture of innovation and collaboration
- Set clear goals and expectations for the team, regularly monitor progress, and provide constructive feedback. You will lead performance reviews, ensure alignment with organisational objectives, and support career development by identifying opportunities for training, upskilling, and leadership roles
- Participate in hiring efforts to attract top talent and build a high-performing data science team. You’ll play a key role in defining the team structure and ensuring the right mix of skills to meet the evolving needs of the organisation
- Collaborate closely with the VP of Computational Sciences & Engineering to define the long-term vision and direction for data science within the organisation
- Oversee multiple data science projects simultaneously, focusing on therapeutic program delivery. You will ensure timely execution, effective resource allocation, and alignment with broader project objectives
- Contribute to strategic planning, setting key objectives, and ensuring alignment between data science initiatives and the company's broader goals, such as leveraging machine learning and AI for competitive advantage
- Help translate business needs into data-driven strategies and oversee their execution
- Build strong relationships with stakeholders across various functions, including wet lab, software, business development, and communications. You'll work closely with these teams to ensure data science is seamlessly integrated into the organisation, translating complex technical insights into clear, actionable information for senior management and other departments
- Serve as the data science expert for the organisation, offering insights and mentorship to both team members and other business
- Stay at the forefront of new methodologies and tools in data science. You will lead the development of cutting-edge solutions, introducing advanced machine learning techniques and statistical models to address complex challenges, particularly in therapeutic and precision medicine applications
- Establish and enforce data science best practices throughout the organisation. This includes standards for reproducibility, transparency, and ethical data use, while ensuring high-quality outputs and consistent approaches across all projects

Our take
LabGenius is a protein engineering platform that integrates several technologies from the fields of machine learning, synthetic biology, and robotics. It uses computational methods to explore protein fitness landscapes and improve multiple drug properties simultaneously.
Historically, the discovery of protein therapeutics has been a labour-intensive, human-driven process, with scientists manually designing and executing experiments. This traditional approach is limited by our cognitive abilities to fully understand the complexity of biological systems. LabGenius is breaking these barriers with EVA, a smart robotic platform that not only designs and conducts experiments but also learns from them This continuous learning allows EVA to refine its understanding of genetic design rules, growing smarter with each experiment.
Currently, LabGenius is deploying EVA to develop novel antibody fragments for therapeutic areas, including solid tumours, where they offer significant advantages over traditional antibody formats. EVA's ability to engineer high-value drug properties - such as efficacy, potency, selectivity, and manufacturability - addresses challenges that have long hindered the field. This is an exciting development for the team, and they are now exploring how these principles can be applied more broadly to tackle human diseases.
