Role
Who you are
- Proven ability to co-lead a team alongside a PM, taking joint ownership of delivery, quality and outcomes, not just your own output
- Strong hands-on engineering ability; comfortable shipping high-quality, well-tested TypeScript in production and holding the team to the same standard
- Significant experience with AWS and modern serverless (Lambda, API Gateway, SQS, EventBridge, DynamoDB, S3, CloudWatch) or other cloud platforms
- A pragmatic approach to technical decisions, balancing reliability, observability, performance and cost, and bringing engineers along on the reasoning
- Track record of raising engineering standards as a force-multiplier, through code reviews, pairing, design discussions and shaping long-term technical direction
- Strong communication skills; able to represent the team upwards and translate business goals into clear technical scope and delivery plans
- Experience improving developer experience, CI/CD, release practices and delivery cadence across a team
- Confident using AI development tools every day, with experience of helping a team adopt them without letting quality slip

Desirable
- Experience aligning technical direction beyond your immediate team, working with senior stakeholders and other leads to shape how engineering works at a broader level
- Familiarity with infrastructure-as-code tools like Terraform or CDK, with a track record of improving operational resilience through observability, runbooks and automated recovery
- Practical experience designing event-driven, distributed systems and navigating the trade-offs that come with eventual consistency at scale
- Background in a fast-moving, product-led environment where commercial impact drives decisions and adapting quickly is part of the job
- A track record of creating the conditions for engineers to step up, not just mentoring but actively giving ownership and space to grow
What the job involves
- Engineering Lead for the Acquisition team. You'll work closely with the PM to lead the team toward its goals, owning delivery, operational reliability and developer experience
- You’ll ship production code and provide technical coaching and leadership to the engineers around you, not line management. You'll also shape how the team uses AI tools and coding agents to ship faster without lowering the quality bar
- Own delivery and technical quality for the Acquisition team, working hand in hand with the PM to ship features that directly impact how fleets find and choose Flock
- Write high-quality, well-tested TypeScript and own end-to-end delivery to production
- Work closely with the PM, the Engineering Leadership Team and stakeholders to translate business goals into clear technical scope, success metrics and delivery plans
- Lead by example through code, design discussions and pairing
- Coach and mentor engineers across the team to raise standards and share ownership of technical direction
- Drive improvements to developer experience, CI/CD, observability and release practices that make the whole team faster and more confident
- Make pragmatic trade-offs that balance reliability, performance and cost across AWS services
- Decide how the team uses AI, from coding assistants to agent workflows in review and release, keeping engineering judgement where it matters
- As an Engineering Lead at Flock you'll own delivery and technical direction for the Acquisition team, co-leading with the PM to ship products that directly drive growth, while raising the bar for the engineers around you
- Integrate with and contribute to the development of RESTful APIs exposed via API Gateway
- Use your AWS experience (Lambda, API Gateway, SQS, EventBridge, DynamoDB, S3, CloudWatch) to support and extend the Acquisition team's services and pipelines
- Work with infrastructure-as-code tools like Terraform or CDK for provisioning and managing cloud resources
- Co-own the team's success with the PM, jointly leading projects from scoping and planning through to delivery and measuring impact
- Give engineers the space and ownership to lead projects themselves, asking the right questions to challenge their thinking and help them land on the right solution
- Deliver high-quality, well-tested code and act as a force-multiplier, raising standards through code reviews, pairing and design discussions
- Champion practical testing, type-safe APIs and pragmatic patterns that shape long-term technical direction across the team
- Set the example on AI-assisted development and coach engineers on where it genuinely speeds the team up and where human judgement needs to stay in the loop
- Working closely with your PM, you'll bring clarity to complex problems and help define sharply scoped, impactful deliverables. Your success won't be measured by your own output alone, but by the output, quality and growth of the whole team around you

Flock was originally founded to provide insurance for drone trafficking, an untapped area of aviation insurance. While the company is exploring other untapped niches in transportation insurance, such as autonomous vehicles, its primary focus is on commercial fleets.
The company believes that traditional insurance isn't growing fast enough to cover certain niche areas, and this is where Flock comes in. The company wants to be the bridge between the insurance of today and the transportation of tomorrow. Its service suites are unique in that the insurance cover is only triggered in vehicles in motion. This is made possible by hooking into the cars' telematics.
The company has partnered with big-name brokers, underwriters and telematics providers. Flock's foresight has been rewarded with significant funding and enough backing to disrupt the $160 billion motor insurance industry. It has managed to bag several big names as customers, such as Onto and Land Rover. After partnering with Admiral in 2024, Flock was acquired by Admiral Insurance in 2026, becoming the parent company's primary telemetry fleet insurance offering.
