Company mission

To empower the providers and builders of the care ecosystem with the tools they need to deliver a complete virtual experience for the end-consumers.

Role

Who you are

  • You have a track record of success: 6+ years recent experience shipping Rails applications to production environments with monolithic, service-oriented, or microservice architectures. Candidates from a healthcare or healthtech background will be prioritized
  • You strive for Operational Excellence: Best practice experience with coding standards, refactoring, complexity reduction, Domain Driven Design, and schema design
  • You bring hands-on experience: Experience with object oriented design and modularization of monolithic applications and have experience maintaining and upgrading Ruby and Rails-based production stacks
  • Tools & Tech Experience: Our stack includes Rails, React, Typescript, GraphQL, Postgres, Redis, Sidekiq, RSpec, and Capybara
  • Development and Testing: Experience with React, JavaScript, and TypeScript testing, along with writing unit and higher-level tests to ensure code quality and prevent regressions. Responsibility for structuring code bases with proper types and consistently writing production-ready code that accounts for edge cases and potential errors
  • Prioritization matters: Ability to prioritize platform needs to both short term and long term business needs
  • Strong interpersonal and collaboration skills: You care about people - your colleagues, our customers, and everyone around you. People want to work for and with you. You lead with influence, not authority
  • Remote Work: Ability to deliver in a remote-first environment, regularly contributing to code review, actively looking for security vulnerabilities, systematically debugging customer-facing issues, working comfortably with both greenfield and legacy systems, and helping grow a DevOps culture
  • Exceptional communication skills, both written & verbal
  • Grit: You have a bias towards execution. You maniacally focus on getting the job done, and nothing slows you down
  • Mission driven: You have a passion for healthcare and want to work at a place that cares deeply about helping to improve patient outcomes and experiences
  • Embody Good Citizen Principles: You incorporate Healthie’s values (Respect, Reliability, Resilience) in your work

Desirable

  • Infrastructure and Deployment: Focus on infrastructure and monitoring aspects, including CI/CD construction and maintenance, hands-on experience with cloud platforms like AWS or GCP, and knowledge of IAAS technologies such as Terraform, Kubernetes, Puppet, Chef, and Ansible
  • Application Architecture and Performance: Experience with application architecture and performance optimization. Responsibility for solving database query problems, application performance monitoring, object-oriented design (OOD), modularization of monolithic applications, and domain-driven design (DDD)

What the job involves

  • The Senior Software Engineer will be a central part of the web engineering team. You'll help with design and implementing the software for new features and extending existing features
  • At the Senior Software Engineer level and above, you'll also be occasionally depended on to work with production systems, (we use a PAAS and our overall architecture is mostly a monolith, so there are no complicated devops needs.)
  • We have a friendly, educational code review process, where code is reviewed by both managers and peers. We use a kanban-like workflow, where work begins life in a spec review process and then continues down the roadmap through implementation, review, QA, and deployment. The process allows for feedback and input from engineers every step of the way
  • Our product team is always responsive to ideas and feedback from the engineering team. The two teams collaborate to produce a steady stream of well specified, reasonably scoped product changes that are a joy to implement and never result in redundant effort. Our team is collaborative, smart, and diverse
  • Consistently writing well-tested, easily understood, production-ready code that accounts for edge cases and potential errors, preferring self-documenting and well-documented code over ad hoc comments
  • Writing unit and higher level tests to prove happy path behavior, handle expected edge cases and errors gracefully, prevent regressions, and serve as baseline documentation
  • Understanding the business domain at a high level and developing deep expertise in a portion of the business domain
  • Competence and comfort using git with trunk-based development
  • Contributing to continuously improving documentation
  • Maintaining HIPAA and relevant privacy and security compliance
  • Having a strong sense of software stewardship, leveraging small improvements for accumulating net gains
  • An ability to deliver in a remote-first environment with a kanban process
  • Regularly contributing to code review and actively looking for security vulnerabilities
  • Systematically debugging to diagnose customer facing issues in a timely manner
  • Working comfortably with both greenfield and legacy systems on both client side and server side
  • Comfort helping grow a DevOps culture
  • Systematically using monitoring and metrics to help improve application performance and engineering processes

Application process

  • Resume Review
  • Round 1: Preliminary Interview
  • Round 2: Hiring Manager Interview
  • Round 3: Take Home Assignment (Coding Challenge)
  • Round 4: Behavioral Interview
  • Round 5: Technical Interview
  • Round 6: Executive Interview
  • Reference Checks

Our take

The past few years have seen a substantial rise in provision and uptake of telemedicine services, with over one in five Americans now signed up. This successful reimagining of healthcare provision into something more accessible, affordable, and effective, has led to a surge of VC investment and rapid-growth success stories in the sector. Would-be startups, however, have to navigate the costly and complex process of building out core, HIPAA-compliant infrastructure.

So software and API company Healthie is filling the gap in this market. The business helps these companies build and deliver health and wellness services by providing a fully-brandable suite of telehealth, business management, and coaching tools. This means that businesses can launch and scale at a fractional of the cost, and in a fraction of the time.

It’s a broad-based set of solutions that’s won Healthie an impressive number of client organizations across over 20 different countries. This vigorous growth looks likely to continue, too. Telemedicine remains a popular healthcare tool, and as regulations on telehealth data privacy tighten, the growing number of startups in this space are likely to need more support than ever.
