Role
Who you are
- 6+ years of experience in a data engineering role building products, ideally in a fast-paced environment
- Good foundations in Python and SQL
- Experience with Spark, PySpark, DBT, Snowflake and Airflow
- Knowledge of visualization tools, such as Metabase, Jupyter Notebooks (Python)
- A knack for simplifying data, expressing information in charts and tables
- Empathy: you are eager to see the world from your users’ perspectives
- Energy: you're attracted to ambiguity & are a self-starter. You love to drive the direction of ambiguous projects
- Motivation: our mission excites you. We are working to solve the biggest problems in mental health care today (access and affordability)
- Experience with Looker and build Looker ML models is a plus
What the job involves
- Headway is looking for a Senior Data Engineer to help bring us closer to our mission: creating access to affordable, quality mental healthcare across the United States
- Data is foundational to that mission
- It powers everything from critical business decisions to the systems that support patients, providers, payers, and internal teams
- The Data Engineering team builds and maintains the infrastructure that makes this possible
- We partner closely with stakeholders across the company - including Finance, Insurance Systems, Analytics, Product, and Data Science - to ensure that Headway's data platform is scalable, reliable, and secure
- As a Senior Data Engineer, you'll help shape the future of our data architecture
- You’ll work cross-functionally to design and implement robust data pipelines, define and uphold data governance standards, and ensure our platform is built to meet the growing needs of the business
- Design, build, and maintain scalable data pipelines and infrastructure to support internal stakeholders and core business functions
- Define, develop, and refine data governance, monitoring, and quality standards across the company
- Partner with Product and Engineering to advocate for best practices in data engineering and ensure data needs are addressed early in the product lifecycle
- Work cross-functionally with Analytics, Data Science, and Infrastructure to continuously evolve Headway’s data architecture
- Own and drive technical decisions across the data platform, contributing to everything from performance optimization to infrastructure-as-code

Headway connects clients with therapists who accept insurance as payment and provides independent practitioners with the tools and resources needed to serve their patients and manage administrative workloads.
Headway’s concept is timely, with national mental health under particular strain following events from the past few years. The company facilitates over 300,000 appointments per month and has attracted backing from the likes of Accel and Google Ventures.
Covering 16 states and the District of Columbia, the company intends to broaden its presence across the US using its 2023 Series C funding of $125 million. This is a crucial avenue for further growth, as medical care deserts across the US mean the potential market is vast.
