Who you are
- 6–10 years’ PR experience, ideally in a mix of agency and in-house roles
- Strong media network in US fintech, personal finance, AI, and tech press
- Proven ability to secure Tier 1 media coverage in a B2C context
- Excellent writing skills – able to translate complex ideas into sharp, engaging copy
- Experience managing agencies and driving measurable results
- Creative thinker with the confidence to pitch bold, unconventional ideas
- Organised and proactive - you don’t wait for direction, you bring ideas to the table
- Comfortable working hybrid, with stakeholders in the UK and agency partners in the US
- Bonus: experience building or supporting executive social media programs, particularly for founders or C-suite leaders
What the job involves
- Cleo is on a mission to fight for the world’s financial health and our voice in the public conversation is a huge part of that
- As an AI-powered fintech that helps millions of people make better money decisions, we’re looking for a PR Manager to own our US “news engine,” build our media presence, and help shape how the world understands Cleo at the intersection of AI, personal finance, and culture
- This role will work closely with our US PR agency, our founder & CEO, and internal stakeholders across marketing and product
- You’ll need to be equally comfortable pitching a creative consumer story, translating complex AI-driven product ideas into accessible narratives, building a content calendar for our CEO, and drafting a sharp op-ed that cuts through the fintech noise
- This is a hands-on, strategic role with a clean slate — no inherited processes or red tape
- You’ll be expected to build momentum quickly, spot opportunities others miss, and turn Cleo’s product, data, and point of view into news
- Drive Cleo’s PR strategy in the US, working with our agency to secure high-quality, high-impact media coverage
- Develop and maintain strong media relationships, especially with journalists covering AI, fintech innovation, personal finance, and consumer tech
- Translate Cleo’s AI-powered product, data insights, and financial expertise into clear, compelling media narratives
- Build and manage a proactive content calendar for Cleo’s leadership team, especially our founder & CEO
- Draft press releases, thought leadership articles, and reactive statements that reflect Cleo’s brand voice and make complex financial and AI concepts feel human and relevant
- Partner with Marketing and our founder to create “newsworthy” moments and campaigns that cut through
- Oversee and manage PR agency output, ensuring it’s strategic, creative, and delivering results
- Drive media outreach around product launches, reports, and cultural moments in the fintech and personal finance space
- Experience creating media moments around product launches, including launches involving AI-driven features or innovation
- Support corporate social channels with content ideas and copy, with a particular focus on executive and founder profiles
- Track coverage, measure PR impact, and report results to stakeholders
Our take
People are increasingly not satisfied with the products being offered by traditional banks, which have proven slow to react to the needs of younger consumers who expect more from their everyday experiences.
Cleo was one of the first companies to make great use of chatbots that sit within Facebook's messenger app. This chatbot-first approach and Gen Z user base have given it strong virality. It now has millions of registered users, 99% of which are based in the US, leading to a decision to take a year break from the UK market to focus on its US Gen Z customers. And after a successful year in the US its now eyeing up a return to the UK.
Its Series C funding will help the company to double down in the US, where it will make a significant increase in employee headcount, and enable Cleo to maintain and expand its service during an economic downturn.
Financial advice delivered via bots is a crowded space, so Cleo benefits from having a strong brand presence. It has gone for very bold, fun, Gen Z-focused messaging which helps it to stand out from competitors such as Emma, Plum, and Chip.
