Role
Who you are
- 8+ years of related experience (e.g., FP&A, management consulting, program management); prior Cloud Infrastructure experience a plus
- Strong analytical skills and ability to use data to drive decision making; demonstrated proficiency in communicating analysis in a clear and easily understood manner
- Willingness to build relationships and collaborate across all levels and teams
- Ability to deal with ambiguity and competing objectives in a fast-paced environment
- Strong understanding of financial planning and accounting concepts a plus
- Proficiency in Excel & financial modeling; experience working with data sets, SQL and Looker knowledge a plus
- Candidates must reside in or be willing to relocate to the San Francisco Bay Area (Alameda, Contra Costa, Marin, Napa, San Francisco, San Mateo, Santa Clara, Solano, and Sonoma counties)
What the job involves
- We are looking for an experienced Finance Manager to join our growing Finance team
- The Finance org at Discord is responsible for planning, forecasting and strategic analysis
- Senior Product and Engineering leadership rely on the Finance org to develop actionable insights, to steer decisions on cloud infrastructure investment, and to help the business scale efficiently as Discord grows globally!
- Given this team's unique position in the company, you will help establish coordination and communication between various teams such as Product Management, Infrastructure Engineering, Finance & Accounting, and outside vendors
- With these teams you will drive our planning and forecasting process, ensuring that both are aligned with our longer term strategic and financial aspirations
- In addition, you will gain invaluable experience that offers autonomy, deep interactions with business partners, and the opportunity to have an impact on a rapidly growing global business
- Collaborate with business partners on designing and developing hosting efficiency metrics, interactive dashboards, analyses, etc. to drive key business decisions related to cloud infrastructure
- Establish financial planning processes related to expense forecasting, spend tracking, cost ownership, and resource allocation
- Conduct cost / benefit analyses and communicate key drivers / inputs to support business decisions
- Support vendor negotiations on large multi-year agreements for hosting
Our take
Discord is an industry giant in the chat app space. The free platform has rapidly become one of the most popular services in the sector since being founded in 2015. It counts over 150 million active users in 19 million communities, successfully expanding beyond its original focus on video game players to become a broader social networking app and public forum.
Discord's userbase has grown rapidly as remote work has become the norm and a new generation of internet users has come online, attracted to its youthful presentation and plethora of gaming and social tools. It has since fended off takeover bids from Microsoft and interest from other giants such as Amazon and Twitter, and has grown into a profitable company, funded by optional subscription fees and commissions from sales through the platform.
Discord’s remarkable growth, however, is not without obstacles. The company faces competition from deep-pocketed giants like Facebook, and regulatory concerns from those worried about the platform’s relatively light chat moderation. However, the company has the resources and expertise to adapt. For example, the acquisition of harassment detection software company Sentropy will go a long way towards placating the concerns of critics, as will the 2024 acquisition of teen app Gas used to give anonymous compliments to friends. All of these purchases are part of Discord's move to expand out of its mostly gaming-focused customer base.
