Role
Who you are
- At least 1-3 years experience as a software engineer
- Experience with game development
- Experience with some parts of our tech stack: Python, Elixir, Rust, Typescript/React, or C++. You don't need expertise in all of them, but you should be comfortable picking up new languages and learning new systems
- A sense for product and design. We don't operate in silos, and you'll be collaborating closely with cross-functional peers. You should be willing to share opinions and collaborate to make something great
- A growth mindset. You're not afraid to dive into new code, learn new things, or ask for help when you're blocked. You learn from your mistakes and work through obstacles with the rest of the team
- You actively leverage AI coding tools to accelerate your productivity

What the job involves
- People come to Discord before, during, and after gaming, and we want to make that experience even better. The Developer Success team is building the tools for game developers to make that happen by harnessing the power of Discord from right within their games

- Building features for game developers across the Discord app, developer portal, APIs, realtime infrastructure, and Social SDK
- Collaborating with other engineers on your team to write, review, and ship elegant and scalable code. You’ll take pride in the fact that your code will be enjoyed by millions and millions of people!
- With support from your team, you'll own your projects end-to-end, from initial design through post-launch. Along the way, you'll help break high-level ideas into concrete tasks with milestones, build and ship them
- Listening and working with our game developer partners to better understand their needs in order to improve our features and tools. This could mean hopping into partner meetings as a technical resource or working with our DevRelations team to answer their questions
- Working with product managers, designers, and partner managers to find the way forward through ambiguity
- Using your attention to detail to continually raise the quality bar of the software we write
Our take
Discord is an industry giant in the chat app space. The free platform has rapidly become one of the most popular services in the sector since being founded in 2015. It counts over 90M daily active users in 19M communities, successfully expanding beyond its original focus on video game players to become a broader social networking app and public forum.
Discord's userbase has grown rapidly as remote work has become the norm and a new generation of internet users has come online, attracted to its youthful presentation and plethora of gaming and social tools. It has since fended off takeover bids from Microsoft and interest from other giants such as Amazon and X, and has grown into a profitable company, funded by optional subscription fees and commissions from sales through the platform.
Discord's remarkable growth, however, isn't without obstacles. The company faces competition from deep-pocketed rivals such as Meta and ongoing scrutiny over moderation and user safety. Despite this, Discord has continued to strengthen its platform through investments in privacy and accessibility, including the rollout of end-to-end encrypted voice and video calls for all users and the launch of a native Windows on ARM app to improve performance on next-generation devices. Alongside acquisitions such as Sentropy and Gas, these developments show just how hard Discord is pushing beyond its gaming roots.
