Who you are
- You’re a pragmatic, systems-minded engineer who enjoys leading through influence as much as through code. You think in terms of long-term impact, operate comfortably in ambiguity, and find energy in improving both technology and culture
- You’ve built and shipped complex products in startups or fast-paced environments where autonomy and impact matter
- Deep expertise in backend development with the versatility to work across the stack
- Strong hands-on experience with TypeScript, Node.js, and familiarity with MongoDB and AWS-based architectures (bonus for EventBridge, Lambdas, DynamoDB, IaC)
- Exposure to or curiosity about AI tools and their real-world application in user-facing products
- Experience working in cross-functional product teams, balancing product and technical decisions
- A track record of pragmatic, high-impact technical calls and influencing outcomes across teams
- Experience mentoring and levelling up other engineers
- Excellent communication skills - you can simplify complex systems and align people around ideas
What the job involves
- This is more than a coding role. It’s an opportunity to shape the technical direction of a fast-moving, product-led company with thousands of users. As a Staff Engineer at Mixmax, you’ll work across teams to influence key product decisions, ship high-impact features, scale our architecture, and level up our engineering culture
- You’ll operate in a dual mandate: part of your time will be spent deeply embedded in a product team, driving design, delivery, and technical excellence; the rest will be spent working at the company level, partnering with the other Staff Engineer to shape Mixmax’s technical strategy and culture
- Together, you’ll form the most senior technical voice in the company, reporting directly to the Director of Engineering
- Be the senior technical voice in your team: design, review, mentor, and help deliver major features at high quality
- Partner with the other Staff Engineers to drive cross-company technical strategy, architectural standards, and engineering culture
- Own cross-cutting initiatives: scalability, reliability, developer experience, system evolution
- Define, evangelize, and maintain lightweight guardrails (RFCs, ADRs, patterns etc) that scale with our team
- Work alongside PMs, Designers, and Engineering leadership to align on direction, push back when needed, and ensure architecture enables (not constrains) product goals
- Raise the bar on quality, mentoring engineers, and contributing to how we work, review, and make decisions
- Own your impact. At this level, you’ll define what success looks like: spotting high-leverage opportunities, setting your own direction, and making tangible improvements that strengthen how we build, ship, and collaborate
- Dual Leverage: Work hands-on in a product team while shaping company-wide technical direction
- Most Senior Technical Voice: You and the other Staff Engineer are the technical backbone of Mixmax, representing engineering at the highest level
- Direct Access & Influence: Report to the SLT (Director of Engineer) - your proposals go straight to leadership
- Cultural Leadership: Help shape engineering practices and culture across
- Ambiguity & Autonomy: Lead through fuzzy problem spaces and shifting trade-offs with freedom to decide how
- High Impact: Your work will unblock multiple teams, accelerate delivery, and shape the long-term system architecture
Our take
MixMax is a platform looking to innovate for sales closers by freeing the workforce up from email-based busywork. Customer-facing work like sales typically requires multiple apps and platforms, task managers, and inefficient integrations. MixMax offers a streamlined service to help convene tasks like email tracking, scheduling, customer engagement, and lead-chasing on a single platform.
Email inefficiency is a key point of frustration for many employees - and a real timewaster. This has, however, attracted competition from startups and larger established organizations like Outreach and Streak.
With a founding team including members with experience in product-building at companies like Apple, Google, and Skype, and a 2023 integration with Salesforce, as well as new integrations with HubSpot, MixMax is well-armed to take on larger-scale competitors.
