Our take

Application code can be developed quite swiftly, but the database code underlying it is often a major bottleneck. The need to make manual changes to databases slows down development and introduces the risk of human error into the process. Liquibase was created to automate database schema updates, eliminating wasted time and making databases safer and more secure in the process.

There are other database change management tools on the market (for instance Flyway), but Liquibase stands out in its flexibility in support for XML, JSON and YAML languages for defining database changes in addition to the industry-standard SQL, and in its ability to work with both NoSQL and relational database types. Because of these advantages, Liquibase has developed a strong developer community and has been downloaded over 100 million times, and is used by enterprises such as IBM Watson Health, Ticketmaster and UPS.

The company is continuing to develop its product and extend its market lead. Having won awards in 2022 for its DataOps solution, it is aiming to build on its success by doubling down on its product's security and collaborative features. As more companies realise the time and cost savings in database management solutions, Liquibase is well-positioned for future growth.
