Role
Who you are
- 3+ years of engineering management experience, 6+ years of experience working in software engineering
- 5+ years of programming experience with at least one modern language such as Go, Rust, Java, or C++
- 5+ years of experience contributing to architecture and design (architecture, design patterns, reliability and scaling) of new and existing systems
- Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related field, or 5-8+ years relevant work experience
- You get things done across organizational and technical boundaries
- You have experience driving large initiatives spanning across multiple teams in your current or previous roles, and excel at collaborating cross-team and cross-functionally
- You had experience managing technical initiatives aimed towards web performance or developer productivity, or you’re interested in building this expertise
- Proven experience in building and maintaining scalable and highly available fault-tolerant distributed systems and application architectures
- Solid understanding of infrastructure design, including the operational trade-offs of various designs
- Familiarity with modern CI/CD practices and build systems, such as GitLab CI/CD, CircleCI, GitHub Actions
- Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written
What the job involves
- Oversee the operations of our cutting-edge infrastructure
- Your expertise will be instrumental in the design and scaling of our carbon-reducing operating model, as well as the management of critical hardware, software and network components
- You will be expected to be involved in writing and reviewing code, as well as reviewing proposals and architecture documents
- In this role, you will drive the evaluation of tools and frameworks, carefully considering their impact on reliability, scalability, operational costs, and ease of adoption
- Ensuring our digital currency mining operations are at the forefront of innovation and efficiency
- As a Software Engineering Manager on this team, you will work closely with your tech lead to mentor and develop talented software engineers
- You will be responsible for shaping their technical skills and team fit assessments, fostering an environment of continuous learning and growth
- Through your guidance and partnership with our tech leads, you will actively contribute to the professional development of our engineers, empowering them to reach their full potential
- Lead and nurture the growth of the engineering team, mentoring individual engineers to help them achieve their fullest potential and career goals
- Embed Crusoe's core values into the daily operations and culture of the engineering team, ensuring these principles guide all decision-making and processes
- Collaborate with diverse teams to integrate a wide range of equipment used in oil fields and renewable sites into Crusoe's software ecosystem, ensuring seamless operation
- Provide robust support to an extensive field team, focusing on power operations for Crusoe's cloud infrastructure and Bitcoin mining deployments
- Engage in hands-on management of low-level systems, fine-tuning and optimizing ASIC mining processes to maximize power efficiency and effectiveness
- Foster a collaborative and dynamic environment where creativity and technical excellence are encouraged, leading to the development of cutting-edge mining solutions
Our take
Crusoe is tackling one of the biggest challenges facing the digital age: the enormous energy demand of data centres and AI infrastructure. As AI models grow more powerful, they require immense computing power (and therefor electricity) to train and operate. This surge in energy use has put some pressure on power grids, driven up costs, and raised environmental concerns. Crusoe is on a mission to make this process more sustainable by finding smarter, cleaner, and more efficient ways to power the data centres that drive modern computing.
The company started out by putting wasted energy to work. Originally known as Crusoe Energy, it captured natural gas that would otherwise be burned off ("flared") at remote oil sites and used it to power modular data centres. Today, Crusoe has evolved into a major player in AI infrastructure, designing and operating large-scale data centres near renewable or stranded energy sources. It's now one of a handful of "neocloud" companies (next-generation cloud providers focused on flexible, efficient computing for AI workloads). And its facilities are helping tech giants like OpenAI handle the massive computing requirements of training advanced AI models.
Recently, Crusoe has attracted some huge investor attention, tripling its valuation to over $10B and raising $1.4B in its latest funding round. It's building OpenAI's first major US data centre campus and even experimenting with bold new frontiers. In partnership with Starcloud, Crusoe plans to deploy the world's first space-based cloud computing infrastructure, powered by solar energy and orbiting the Earth by 2027. If successful, this could redefine how and where computing happens, opening up a cleaner, virtually limitless source of energy for AI's next generation.
