Role
Who you are
- 1+ years of experience directly managing engineers - including providing leadership, mentorship, feedback, and investing in their career growth
- You have experience with modern web technologies such as React or Web Components or with delivering Apps at scale
- Familiarity with Design Systems, Accessibility, or redesigns/re-architectures
- You are an excellent coach, mentor, and developer of engineers, having led both junior and experienced engineers and built a path of opportunities to grow your team seniority over time
- You are highly collaborative and enjoy working with other squads that are part of your organization

What the job involves
- We are seeking an Engineering Managerto join our User Experience Foundation org!
- You will be working in a hybrid iOS, Android, and Web org alongside other teams focused on Design Systems, Accessibility, and the core user experience of the Etsy apps
- Lead a team of 5 to 8 iOS and Android engineers, with the possibility of managing Web or API engineers. At Etsy, engineering managers have a limited role in the hands-on process of building software, but a very large role in orchestrating and coaching engineers to achieve results together
- Collaborate across Product, Design, and Engineering to deliver high-quality user experiences, occasionally working with Research or Analytics to run A/B experiments and validate product improvements
- Work with other leaders within engineering to develop and evolve engineering processes and best practices
- Prioritize, scope, plan, develop, and deliver projects at various completion stages or definitions when started. Planning and delivery of your team’s roadmap
- Serve as a coach, mentor, and advocate for the engineers on your team
- Participate in the end-to-end recruiting process, hiring, and onboarding exceptional engineering talent
- Foster a culture of learning, collaboration and thoughtful delivery on your teams
Our take
Created as an alternative to more corporate eCommerce sites, Etsy is a peer-to-peer (P2P) website where users buy and sell handmade crafts, vintage items, art, and photography. The online marketplace works similarly to Amazon and eBay, only with an emphasis on unique items rather than mass-produced merchandise.
Since its IPO in 2015, it has managed to hold its own in an increasingly competitive eCommerce industry, including from Amazon's handmade section that launched in 2015. Further, by providing sellers with ownership over pricing and branding, the site is attractive for those wanting to set up a business on an established platform.
However, the seller-side of Etsy is not without problems. The recent hike in transaction fees and the introduction of mandatory marketing fees for artists with high turnovers has created significant discontent amongst sellers. Etsy must reconcile these issues to ensure artists continue to operate on the same scale within the platform. It plans to attract shoppers with its message of extraordinary, handmade and affordable products.
