What the job involves

  • Payments is key for any healthy marketplace, and is just as central to our product at Airbnb
  • The Payments org at Airbnb is responsible for everything related to settling money in Airbnb’s global marketplace
  • We build technology that powers Airbnb’s massive daily transaction volume to collect payments from guests, distribute payouts to hosts and everything in between
  • Our goal is to make the Payment experience on Airbnb as delightful, magical, intuitive, and easy as possible
  • Within Payments, Payins is a full stack team responsible for all aspects of the guest payment experience - generating quotes, onboarding new payment methods to allow guests to pay us in their preferred method of payment, and enabling self-serve methods to answer questions about their upcoming and previous payments
  • Payins engineers are expected to collaborate closely with cross-functional partners on Product, Design, Data Science, Legal, and more to bring their vision to life
  • We are a sizable team with outsized responsibility
  • All money moving into Airbnb goes through our systems, which means engineers on the team are able to have a multi-million dollar impact on the business through conversion and payment economic improvement initiatives
  • As a Senior Software Engineer on the Payins team, you will help build the systems that power money movement
  • You will be responsible for contributing to the broader technical vision for the team, driving alignment within the team and with our cross-functional partners, and maintaining a high bar for technical quality within the engineering team
  • Your efforts will lead to the delivery of highly visible and impactful launches - like Buy Now Pay Later and Pay By Bank
  • Lead the development and refinement of cross-org initiatives, delivering significant impact to our bottom line
  • Working with cross-functional partners on Product and Design to triage, scope, and evaluate feasibility of proposed features and functionality
  • Identifying new opportunities for impact on conversion, contact reduction, or quality and advocating for the staffing and prioritization of these opportunities
  • Mentoring engineers across the Payins Engineering team
  • Influencing cross-org Quality initiatives to reduce defect introduction rate, reduce incident detection time, and refine incident response processes
  • Being a collaborative teammate that can help elevate the rest of the engineering organization

Our take

When Airbnb was originally founded, the product helped customers book air mattresses on people's apartment floors. Since then, Airbnb has had over a billion customers hosted through its platform. With more than 4 million registered hosts worldwide, it has grown into a major player in the hospitality sector.

Airbnb has been successful in disrupting the traditional holiday lettings sector. Before it existed accommodation was limited to hotels and bed and breakfasts, but Airbnb has mainstreamed the idea of renting out spare rooms or even entire homes. It has created a new sector of hosts purchasing properties to rent out on the platform and provides a level of flexibility and a range of offerings not previously possible for travelers.

Perhaps a victim of its own success, by 2022 supply of Airbnb-listed properties began to outstrip demand in some markets, as hosts overestimated the appetite for domestic travel. However, the company is still posting strong financials and has unveiled new tools to support its hosts in a tougher rental market. With a healthy bottom line and a huge user base, Airbnb is very likely to overcome the current market turbulence and continue its growth.
