Role
Who you are
- 10+ years of professional accounting experience, including 5+ years as a senior-level finance or accounting manager in a high-volume, multi-unit environment (preferred)
- CPA certification required; experience with consolidated entities and UK GAAP and taxation preferred
- Experience with acquisition diligence and integration strongly preferred, but not required
- Experience working within a NetSuite environment is desirable
- Technical Expertise: Strong understanding of US and UK GAAP, financial data analysis, banking processes, and tax regulations across the US and UK
- Leadership Skills: Proven experience building, managing, and mentoring high-performing teams
- Strategic Vision: Demonstrated ability to balance strategic thinking with hands-on execution, navigating both high-level planning and day-to-day management

What the job involves
- We are seeking a dynamic and strategic Controller to take the lead in optimizing our financial operations and driving organizational growth through both organic and acquisition transactions
- With exceptional communication skills and a strong background in financial analysis, you will oversee and enhance the financial accounting and reporting process as well as serve as an integral part of budgeting and management and board reporting
- Reporting directly to the CFO and serving as a member of the leadership team, you will deliver actionable insights and play a critical role in guiding our financial strategy and delivering on those goals
- Financial Leadership & Reporting: (i) Oversee the accounting process including general ledger, accounts receivable/payable, and payroll and (ii) Provide comprehensive financial updates and insights to company leadership, delivering accurate and timely evaluations, analyses, and reports to inform strategic decisions
- Taxation: Working with our external CPA firms, ensure timely and accurate reporting for federal, state, and local income and other taxes including commercial rent taxes, Value Added Tax (VAT), franchise taxes, etc.Budgeting and Forecasting: Partner with FP&A to develop and report against the budget and interim forecasts
- Operational Efficiency: Design, implement, and enforce robust financial controls, guidelines, and operational benchmarks to enhance efficiency and minimize risk
- Team Development: Lead and expand the finance team, fostering a culture of excellence, collaboration, and professional growth
- Strategic Decision-Making: Guide financial decision-making by applying company policies within the context of evolving economic landscapes
- Payroll Optimization: Develop and implement innovative payroll processes to maximize accuracy and efficiency
- Compliance & Risk Management: Ensure adherence to national, state, and local regulations, including UK VAT compliance, while administering consistent accounting policies and controls
- Operational Strategy Support: Contribute to the development and execution of short- and long-term operational strategies aligned with company objectives
- Policy Documentation: Maintain and refine a documented system of accounting policies, operational procedures, and controls to mitigate risk and ensure consistency
Our take
Convene provides co-working space and meeting locations inside office buildings. It was founded to change the way people meet and work, and also to revolutionise how office buildings offered hospitality services to tenants.
Convene's revenue decreased by over 60% in 2020, after the pandemic disrupted its in-person events. In response to this, the company has diversified into the video meetings market. It hosts virtual and hybrid events that more closely resemble the feeling of attending a live business conference. Users can attend the conferences online and interact with the speakers, the hosts, and other attendees in private video chats.
Convene has done well to navigate the macro challenges and reinvent itself, but there will be more challenges to come; Convene also operates in a market with big players, such as Zoom. However, in 2023, the company acquired etc.venues, widening Convene's net to the UK and establishing it as one of the largest premium and event venue companies in the US and UK with 38 locations across the two countries. The goal now is to generate a revenue of $100 million a year by 2025 and it hopes its virtual operations will form a larger percentage of this.
