Who you are
- Currently enrolled in a Bachelor’s degree (rising junior or senior), major in Engineering or related field
- Comfortable writing code in at least one programming language
- Highly resourceful and proactive in using AI tools (e.g., Codex, Claude Code, or similar) to learn, build, and tackle engineering challenges
- Strong problem-solving ability to break down complex problems and iterate quickly
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, including email, slack, and presentations
- Driven to learn new skills and be adaptable in a corporate environment
- Passionate about health, fitness, or consumer hardware
- Thrives in a fast paced environment

What the job involves
- Tonal is looking for a 2026 Summer Intern who is currently enrolled in a Bachelor’s program at a 4-year university and is interested in Software Engineering. You’ll be working in a fast-paced environment within the software team at Tonal
- With the upcoming developments on our product roadmap. You’ll assist key stakeholders and provide support in these areas. You’ll bring a fresh perspective of academic knowledge and familiarity with emerging trends, helping to find innovative solutions while challenging existing methodologies
- This is a 12-16 week internship position based in Toronto, Ontario
- Contribute to the execution of Tonal’s FY26 product roadmap through engineering and quality initiatives
- Explore, prototype, and build automation solutions using modern AI-assisted development tools to improve test coverage and developer productivity
- Collaborate with engineers and product teams to understand features and identify opportunities for automation
- Leverage AI to accelerate test creation, validation strategies, and issue triaging across the software development lifecycle
- Participate in team meetings, sprint ceremonies, and weekly brainstorming sessions
- Prepare reports or presentations and make recommendations to key stakeholders
- Communicate and collaborate with team members on a daily basis

Our take
Tonal has created a proprietary digital weight system and combined this with coaching to offer a personalised and smart home gym. Its wall-mounted system uses electromagnetism to control the weights, replacing bulky and hard-to-store weightlifting equipment with a slim and sleek machine.
As well as selling the machines, Tonal sells subscriptions to personal training sessions and workout routines. The fitness landscape is shifting toward at-home equipment other similar equipment is supplied by Peloton and Mirror.
Tonal has seen impressive growth, investing equity funding into content initiatives, high-profile partnerships, scaling operations, and strong celebrity endorsements. It remains to be seen, however, if the current trend of home-workout equipment will stick around, let alone gain new momentum, but Tonal's cleverly designed equipment gives it an edge over competitors.
