Role
Who you are
- 7+ years of experience building and debugging complex web applications with vanilla JavaScript
- Detailed knowledge of web standards, web components, and browser APIs. Any additional experience with our stack is a bonus: Swift/Kotlin/C#/C++/Python
- Advanced ability to reverse-engineer obfuscated third-party code and reduce issues to minimal test cases
- Passion for hunting elusive bugs and tracing them to their root cause
- Interest in automating repetitive work and building agentic tooling that multiplies the team's impact
- Experience triaging issues, leading incident response, and communicating clearly with technical and non-technical stakeholders
- Experience shipping code beyond the web, like native or desktop clients
- Ability to lead complex, ambiguous projects with little to no oversight
What the job involves
- Working on the Web Dependability Engineering team, you'll make sure websites just work in DuckDuckGo's browsers across Mac, Windows, iOS, and Android, helping ensure our users have the best-possible experience browsing with DuckDuckGo. Recent projects include:
- Reverse-engineering how sites detect our privacy protections and building countermeasures that keep pages working
- Shimming browser APIs so sites work seamlessly across different browser engines and system webviews
- Building LLM agent pipelines that automatically reproduce and triage reported site breakage
- As a Senior Web Compatibility Engineer, you'll be our resident expert on why websites break and how to fix them: owning the webcompat side of our triage process, debugging gnarly issues in code you don't control, distinguishing site bugs from browser bugs from privacy protection-induced breakage, leading the charge when a top site breaks and becomes an incident, shipping durable fixes across every platform, and work on related projects that prevent user churn and keep users coming back to DuckDuckGo
Our take
Companies are making money off of people's private information online without their consent. DuckDuckGo believes the internet shouldn't be this invasive and that getting the privacy you deserve online should be an easily accessible option.
With the company's Privacy Essentials desktop browser extension for Safari, Firefox, & Chrome and the mobile DuckDuckGo Privacy Browser for iOS & Android, users can block trackers, secure connections, and search anonymously, so they are protected on any device anywhere.
The company's app is downloaded more than 50M times a year, and its private search engine has become the #2 search engine on mobile in the U.S., Canada, Australia and the Netherlands. DuckDuckGo's next steps include a suite of new privacy solutions, including Email Protection, App Tracking Protection and its first-ever Desktop Apps for Mac and Windows.

Diversity, Equity & Inclusion at DuckDuckGo
- At DuckDuckGo, our vision is to raise the standard of trust online, and our mission is to show the world that protecting privacy is simple. Having a diverse, inclusive, and equitable team is critical to achieving those goals
- Online privacy abuses make the Internet worse for everyone by weaponizing our personal data in ways that create exploitation, discrimination, polarization, and chilling effects, among other problems. We can't build world-class solutions to these problems without a world-class team. That is why we seek to recruit, retain, and support the continued growth of talented and high-performing people of all different backgrounds, perspectives, and experiences
- Our commitment to embracing diversity and empowering all team members is rooted in our core values: build trust, question assumptions, and validate direction. The willingness to validate direction by engaging in the sometimes uncomfortable process of questioning each other's assumptions and being questioned ourselves can only exist in a trusted space — an inclusive and welcoming environment — which is critical to rejecting bias and building a world-class, globally-used product
