Who you are

Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or a related field, or equivalent practical experience
5+ years of professional experience in front-end development
3+ years of experience in a leadership role (e.g., tech lead, team lead, or engineering manager)
Proficiency in React, TypeScript, and JavaScript
Proven track record of delivering production-grade web applications
Strong understanding of responsive design, modern front-end architecture, and UX principles
Experience in full-stack development and API design

Desirable

Experience working in AI/ML-focused or fast-paced startup environments
Prior startup experience and especially as a technical founder is a plus
Experience managing or mentoring other engineers, including performance feedback and career development
Experience with front-end testing frameworks and CI/CD pipelines
Knowledge of accessibility standards and internationalization practices
Contributions to open source or internal component libraries

What the job involves

We are looking for a Staff / Principal Software Engineer to build our developer-focused web application (fireworks.ai) and shape our front-end architecture
This role blends hands-on engineering with technical leadership, offering the opportunity to mentor other engineers, collaborate cross-functionally, and drive innovation in a fast-paced, AI-focused environment
You'll play a key role in delivering scalable, elegant solutions that directly impact our hundreds of thousands of developers and product vision
You will be directly shaping and shipping the most optimal developer journey combined with our large offering of open source generative AI models and enabling our users to seamlessly build, experiment and ship their AI workflows with our playground
Engineering ownership of fireworks.ai with a strong focus on a delightful developer journey
Participate in the team’s shared accountability for product led growth through the web application and model playground
Design, development, and testing of responsive and performant web applications
Mentor and support a team of front-end/UI engineers through code reviews, pair programming, and ongoing technical coaching
Define and implement front-end architectural standards, best practices, and development workflows
Partner with Product, Design, and Backend Engineering to align on requirements, timelines, and delivery expectations
Build and maintain reusable, scalable component libraries and frameworks
Partner with other engineering teams to build an aligned developer journey across web, SDK and CLI surfaces
Champion quality, performance, and accessibility in all UI development
Drive innovation by staying informed of emerging front-end trends and technologies

Our take

Whilst the development of generative AI is thought to be the reserve of large companies like Open AI, smaller startups such as Firework.AI are making this technology easier to access and develop for smaller companies wanting to handle specific business needs using AI. As an open-source model API, it has one of the largest user bases - with over 12,000 users leveraging Fireworks.AI’s software.

Though lacking the brand name recognition of generative AI developers like Google and Meta, Fireworks.AI differentiates itself in a market crowded with large competitors through its unique approach to deploying its software. It creates smaller, production-grade, customisable generative AI models that can be launched privately and securely, rather than the non-private and inflexible models built by larger companies.

After its 2024 Series B round of $52 million, Fireworks.AI has been valued at over $550 million, an impressive sum for a David in a sea of Goliaths. The company plans to use its funding to develop compound AI systems that can orchestrate across multiple single models. It will be interesting to see how the company evolves with its potentially disruptive business approach to generative AI.
