Role
Who you are
- 5+ years of experience as a Software Engineer
- 2+ years of experience as an Engineering Manager
- Experience building C++ SDKs either as an engineer or manager
- Strong communication skills and the ability to work well cross-functionally. You have opinions but can discuss them generously with other people with all kinds of backgrounds
- Comfortability with ambiguity and are excited about working collaboratively to figure out solutions to complex problems, and then executing on them
- Motivation to help your team members succeed and experience growing engineers
- A holistic approach to problem solving. You believe in solving a problem from first principles rather than simply shipping a solution. You learn from your mistakes and work through obstacles with the rest of the team
Desirable
- You have some experience with game development. Bonus bonus points if you have experience with Unreal or Unity
- You are a Discord user, and understand the core features and flow of Discord communications
What the job involves
- Discord is looking for a highly technical, creative, hands-on, and empathetic Engineering Manager for our Social Layer of Gaming team
- This team is building tools for game developers to harness the power of Discord and put that right into their games
- This work is a key endeavor for Discord and is nestled deeply into our company strategy
- Build highly-engaged teams by hiring, coaching, and instilling a sense of ownership and impact in your engineers
- Work cross-functionally with other engineering teams, Product, Design, Global Partnerships, and Marketing to define your team’s vision and roadmap by understanding the needs of Game Developers and their players
- Collaborate on designing scalable technical solutions, and help to set the technical strategy of our SDK’s architecture
- Collaborate with your engineers to continually raise the bar and ensure your team delivers extraordinary results at the high technical level we set
- Find the right degree of process that makes your team productive and reach greater heights
- Mentor and guide the careers of the engineers through coaching and finding opportunities that support their technical skills and goals
- Partner with your senior manager on strategic planning and to improve the Engineering organization and uphold our workplace philosophy
Our take
Discord is an industry giant in the chat app space. The free platform has rapidly become one of the most popular services in the sector since being founded in 2015. It counts over 150 million active users in 19 million communities, successfully expanding beyond its original focus on video game players to become a broader social networking app and public forum.
Discord's userbase has grown rapidly as remote work has become the norm and a new generation of internet users has come online, attracted to its youthful presentation and plethora of gaming and social tools. It has since fended off takeover bids from Microsoft and interest from other giants such as Amazon and Twitter, and has grown into a profitable company, funded by optional subscription fees and commissions from sales through the platform.
Discord’s remarkable growth, however, is not without obstacles. The company faces competition from deep-pocketed giants like Facebook, and regulatory concerns from those worried about the platform’s relatively light chat moderation. However, the company has the resources and expertise to adapt. For example, the acquisition of harassment detection software company Sentropy will go a long way towards placating the concerns of critics, as will the 2024 acquisition of teen app Gas used to give anonymous compliments to friends. All of these purchases are part of Discord's move to expand out of its mostly gaming-focused customer base.
