Who you are

Ideal candidates should be comfortable leading the development of new frontend features and have demonstrated experience building user-friendly, modern web apps
Demonstrated experience developing full-stack web applications
Strong ability in Typescript and React
High level of ownership and responsibility
Good communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work effectively on a remote team

Desirable

Experience in the specific frameworks we use: React, Next.js, TailwindCSS (frontend); FastAPI, Postgres, Supabase (backend)
Early-stage startup experience
Familiarity with other science and engineering disciplines (e.g., biology, physics, chemistry)
Good design intuition, and ability to help prototype new ideas in Figma
Degree in Computer Science or a related field preferred

What the job involves

As a full-stack software engineer, you’ll work closely with our lead software engineer to develop Scaler from the ground up
We’re looking for candidates who enjoy taking ideas from 0 to 1, owning key pieces of the codebase, and delivering value to users
As the second hire on our software team, you’ll have the opportunity to contribute across the software stack, shape our product roadmap, and grow with the team
While this is a full-stack engineering role, it has an immediate UI/UX focus
Lead UI/UX development for Scaler
Contribute across software stack and play an active role in engineering decisions
Help shape our product vision and roadmap based on user feedback
Work closely with the process engineering, platform, and business teams to align product development with internal/external needs

Our take

As an environmentally friendly alternative to traditional farming, biomanufacturing of food proteins is a key part of humanity's future. But although the science is ready, the infrastructure is not, and the cost of production at scale is preventing revolutionary and essential products from reaching the supply chain.

Synonym exists to support biomanufacturing firms in building production facilities that will allow their products to compete with and outperform traditional sources of protein. With global food production responsible for about a third of carbon emissions (the majority of which is in the production of proteins), this work is vital.

Synonym aims to develop standardized designs for biofermentation facilities that its customers will be able to use instead of making their own at vast expense. This proposal has seen the company raise considerable funds that have supported its development so far. It has also announced a 32,000L+ fermentation scale-up facility in Illinois, in partnership with Primient, will be coming in early 2026.
