Role
Who you are
- 8+ years of experience leading data science, analytics, machine learning, software engineering, or similar technical teams in technology-forward companies
- Proven ability to solve complex technical problems at scale. Ability to define and execute technical and strategic roadmaps that balance immediate delivery with long-term impact
- Proven track record managing and developing diverse teams of data scientists, analysts, and ML engineers
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills; able to simplify complex concepts, build shared understanding, and tell data-driven stories that evoke change. Strong collaborator with senior product, engineering, and business leaders
- Deep expertise in data modeling, applied analytics, experimentation, and machine learning. Hands-on experience with large-scale personalization, search, or recommendation systems is preferred
- Experience with experimentation platforms, A/B testing frameworks, and applying statistical rigor to evaluate model performance in real-world conditions
- Strategic thinker with an innovative, entrepreneurial mindset who thrives in ambiguity
- (Bonus) Background in e-commerce, marketplaces, or consumer technology
What the job involves
- We’re looking for a Director of Data Science to lead a talented team of data practitioners whose work powers the customer experience across search, personalization, recommendations, and the buyer and seller journeys
- Data products and insights delivered by this team are essential to unlocking the potential of secondhand shopping at scale, giving millions of customers better ways to discover one-of-a-kind inventory
- You’ll partner closely with product, engineering, and other cross-functional leaders to shape priorities, translate ambiguous business challenges into structured data problems, and ensure your team delivers measurable customer and business impact
- Set the Vision and Roadmap: Establish a long-term strategic vision for data science and be a critical voice in defining the future of the technology platform as a whole. Partner with product and engineering leaders to translate company objectives into a clear, actionable roadmap
- Lead and Develop the Team: Inspire, lead, and grow a team of 5+ data scientists and analysts, setting goals, mentoring, and creating the conditions for them to do their best work
- Influence at Scale: Represent the data science perspective to senior leadership, ensuring data shapes product and business decisions across organizational boundaries
- Elevate Technical Excellence: Set a high bar for technical rigor and champion best practices in analytics and data science, strengthening ThredUp’s data-driven culture
- Build Data Science Platforms: Oversee infrastructure such as the experimentation platform and AI pipelines, ensuring reliability, scalability, and performance
Our take
Over 40% of Gen Z consumers claim to have bought used clothing as opposed to 20% of Gen X and Boomers. Yet, despite this change in fashion trends, consumers must often rely on brick-and-mortar thrift stores and unregulated second-hand eCommerce marketplaces in order to access to find pre-owned clothing.
ThredUp provides an online marketplace for the buying and selling of secondhand fashionwear, offering affordable prices on discount clothing whilst promising a regulated and consistent approach to quality and cleanliness standards. The company acquires its clothing through sellers sending packages of clothing, which the company then sifts through to decide what is sellable and what should be returned.
The company went public in 2021 and immediately acquired Remix, a European second-hand fashion outlet, as part of its international expansion plans. It has however struggled to achieve profitability thanks to global economic turmoil and a glut of new clothing in the fashion industry causing prices to drop sharply. It is focusing on reducing its operating costs and expanding its storage capacity, and is expected by analysts to weather the current conditions in good form.
