Role
Who you are
- 5+ years of backend engineering experience, with significant time in production environments
- Strong proficiency in Java and hands-on experience building scalable microservices
- Deep understanding of RESTful API design and distributed systems
- Relational databases: Experience with MySQL or PostgreSQL, including performance tuning and schema design
- Experience building systems that handle thousands of requests per second
- Comfort with cloud infrastructure (GCP or AWS preferred), CI/CD, and infrastructure as code
- Strong grasp of system design, architectural patterns, and security best practices
- Strong communication and leadership skills, with the ability to drive cross-team projects
- Bonus: Redis, RabbitMQ, or other message brokers and caching systems; SRE/DevOps or DevSecOps experience
What the job involves
- Medal's backend powers everything from real-time in-app communications and storage of billions of user-generated clips to our ML-based feed and social features
- You'll work closely with product, infra, and data teams to architect and build highly scalable, low-latency systems, helping design critical APIs, evolving our backend infrastructure, mentoring other engineers, and driving technical decisions that impact millions of users
- Our Stack: Electron, React, Redux, Styled Components & other modern web-based technologies, C# and C++ for native Windows recording & more, Swift for iOS, Kotlin for Android, Java, Redis, RabbitMQ, Kubernetes for backend, Terraform, Salt, GitHub Actions, CircleCI for IaC and CI/CD
Our take
Video games have become highly social experiences due to multiplayer gaming, eSports and social media, spawning a huge market for audiences who enjoy watching gaming-related video content. Gamers commonly stream games and edit the footage to produce memes and engage with friends, but this requires many software tools and a separate platform on which to share experiences.
Medal provides a social platform for gaming video clips. It allows users to record and edit footage, make gaming memes, and share content with friends from one place. While the company competes with platform giants like Twitch, it stands out by being specifically designed for gaming content. It also collects in-game data to mitigate cheating and cyberbullying, and integrates directly into any Windows or Android game.
In 2025, Medal spun out "General Intuition", and has since been hiring to both its own and the new company's team. General Intuition's mission is to build a new class of models that can perceive, predict and act in both virtual and physical environments. It is leveraging Medal's vast datasets to this end, reducing the limitations on machine intelligence by training AI on interaction and exploration rather than just written words.
