Role

Who you are

  • 7-12 years of experience in risk management for EU and/or UK financial services institutions
  • Preferable experience working in a 2LOD risk management role for Investment companies in the EU
  • Experience implementing enterprise risk management programs for financial services institutions
  • Experience aligning to the other key risks across the risk taxonomy, including operational, financial and strategic risk as well as intersecting risks
  • A strong understanding of systems, management information, and reporting systems
  • A demonstrated track record of second line of defence independence and challenge/ escalation where concerns are felt
  • An ability to work independently and flexibly within a fast-moving environment

What the job involves

  • We’re looking for a Senior Risk Manager to join the EU and UK Wise Risk team and focus on enabling our Wise Assets product to meet its strategic objectives. This is a second line role and will report into the Head of Risk - EU & UK
  • You will partner with the Head of Risk - EU & UK and the wider Risk organisation in effectively delivering the Risk Management program for the Wise Assets product. You will be involved in all aspects related to Risk Management such as:
  • Review, update and approval of policies owned by Risk Management (2LOD), ensuring these continue to meet business, stakeholder and regulatory expectations
  • Helping to draft policies where gaps are identified, socialising as appropriate internally and seeing through to committee approval and implementation
  • Implement the Enterprise Risk Methodology and Framework Policies, utilised for risk calculations across the company and localise these to meet EU and UK requirements
  • Guide and oversight risk assessments completed for the Wise Assets business, including completion of risk assessments where required
  • Responsible globally to compile risk insights from all regions for input into Global Group committees for effective risk management reporting, leveraging data to provide informed risk profiles and actionable insights
  • Compile periodic risk reporting to the Wise Assets EU and UK governance committees, ensuring reports are data based, risks are well understood and appropriate actions are taken to reduce unacceptable exposures
  • Reporting on instances where the risk management framework has not been properly implemented or is not functioning as expected
  • Reporting on risks trending outside of the defined appetite or are not aligning with the established risk profile
  • Provide qualitative and quantitative reporting on issues and incidents impacting the Wise Asset EU and UK business, including remediation plans, progress updates and escalation where required
  • Assist risk/control owners, product managers and wider parts of the group in correctly utilising the risk management methodology
  • Drive the mapping of controls and oversight control assurance activities to ensure controls are operating effectively
  • Deep dive product solutions, providing risk advice on optimal risk mitigation strategies to support growth
  • Helping to track and deliver progress against our EU and UK Risk Management programme, including execution, and remediation milestones
  • Monitoring the output of internal audit and 2nd LOD oversight functions and coordinating any inputs needed from Risk in the matters of issue/incident remediation plans that impact standing risk exposures
  • Own issue management for the Wise Assets product, driving remediation plans with 1LOD stakeholder, highlighting progress against risk remediation plans and ensuring Wise Assets proactively remediates risk in line with policy and standards established for the group
  • Ensuring that the Wise Assets business is appropriately complying with regulations applicable to 2LOD risk teams and that the function operates suitable systems and controls. This would also include your involvement in driving efficiency where possible through automation, tooling and process improvements
  • Keeping up to date with industry developments and regulations relating to risk governance
  • Develop and coordinate the delivery of risk training across Wise Assets EU and UK with the support of the wider risk organisation
  • Liaise with the global risk functions as well peer regional business units as appropriate

Our take

Wise started when the two founders realised they would be better off trading Estonian kroons for British pounds (and vice versa) between themselves rather than going through banks. That was back in 2011, and they've since grown Wise into one of Europe's most successful tech businesses, exchanging billions of currency every month.

Wise rapidly grew by solving a significant problem for customers, who lost too much money to banks when exchanging currency. They've attracted investment from some of the best investors in the world, from Andreesen Horowitz to Index Ventures and even Richard Branson.

The challenge for Wise will be maintaining their edge and brand power in a market that's becoming increasingly crowded with new entrants (like Revolut and Monzo) and incumbents (traditional banks) trying to catch up. To do so, the company is ramping up its digital and marketing strategies, as well as pushing for further development of its existing products.
