Role
Who you are
- You’ve got a good grasp of computer science fundamentals - either from a computer science degree, or experience
- You’ve worked with both frontend and backend and lean more towards the backend (roughly 70% of your work will be backend and 30% frontend)
- You have a track record of building and shipping software for at least 4 years, with some experience in a small team in a startup environment
What the job involves
- The purpose of this role is to develop software that enables Spill to work with more companies or lowers the cost of providing Spill. Most of that will come as a result of you playing a lead role within a cross-functional team to develop new features and functionality for the Spill product.
- In terms of where you'll be spending your time, around 60% of your working day will be “traditional” full-stack engineering tasks like coding features and writing tests. The remaining 40% will involve product thinking: ideating on solutions, understanding user context, collaborating with stakeholders across the business, and measuring the impact of your work.
- You’ll usually work as part of a cross-functional product and engineering team, but you will also spend time driving projects forward on your own across different parts of the business.
- Examples of projects you might work on: 1. Allow employees to have phone sessions rather than video sessions, meaning building the infrastructure for counsellors to have calls with employees without using their personal phone numbers 2. Build a layer of abstraction on top of all our features to allow us to easily create pricing plans for customers that come with a custom feature set 3. Build a dashboard for our clinical team to easily triage our high risk intake forms in order to flag people that need urgent attention to our safeguarding leads

- 60-minute backend task (real time programming task)
- 60-minute system design task (system whiteboarding)
- 60-minute product requirements task (another whiteboarding exercise that follows on from the system design task)

Our take
Some emotional pain — like heartbreak or taking a risk and failing — can help us to learn and grow, but much of it is unnecessary: prolonged low mood, imposter syndrome and crippling social anxiety for instance are entirely negative. Spill believes that the solution to unnecessary emotional pain is already here — it just hasn't been evenly distributed yet.
Counselling and therapy have existed for over a century, and have been shown time and time again to dramatically increase emotional stability in as little as one or two sessions, and reduce symptoms of depression and anxiety as successfully as antidepressants. Spill's solution is to provide text-based chat therapy as an employee benefit, allowing their customers' staff to access BACP-registered (and equivalently qualified) counsellors on demand.
Spill aspires to become 'everything that the NHS, private health insurance and employee assistance programmes are not' - easy to access, well designed, and 100% unintimidating. It is currently working with over 600 businesses, including Rightmove and Monzo, and is delivering more than 30,000 counselling sessions per year.
