Role
Who you are
- The role requires someone comfortable leading across a number of different areas of design and DesignOps
- You will take time to not only understand and deliver on the executional side of UX, but also give attention to the operational and business aspects related to growing and nurturing the team within the programme’s ecosystem
- Minimum 5 years of design leadership experience
- Have a solid background in UX/UI design with a specialism in app product design
- A history of working across a wide range of creative and UX disciplines, including research, service design, design systems, marketing and content design - both copywriting and art direction, strategy, data and analytics and brand
- Expertise in building design teams and systems for complex product ecosystems and distributed teams
- Ability to demonstrate strong storytelling and presentation skills
- A command of design best practices and in-depth knowledge of design execution and design team operations and management
- Equally confident in mentoring designers as they are managing senior stakeholders
- At the forefront and cutting edge of design thinking, design systems and advocating for how to manage design at scale
- Evidence of leading teams that have delivered ROI using design thinking with a track record of consistently improving product KPI’s through iterative design delivery
- A thought leader who can speak with confidence and experience

What the job involves
- Toyota Connected Europe is looking for an experienced design leader with a background in UX/UI design and research
- You will work with a highly skilled, multi-disciplinary team of 40+ creatives and support a core team of 13 designers to drive the creative execution and design delivery of Toyota and Lexus’ EU car companion apps
- Key responsibilities involve:
- Mentoring a team of creatives
- Managing a wide range of business stakeholders
- Providing strategic design direction of the product experience so designers can create innovative solutions
- Optimising ways of working and process innovation to ensure the team consistently delivers a high level of support to the business
- Guiding and coaching the product side of the business in relation to design thinking
- User-centred design and UX best practice, whilst fiercely championing the needs of the customers
- You will be the key point of contact for multiple initiatives, accountable for design deliverables across various teams and regions
- Success will be measured on the ability to manage design at scale as the products launch in multiple countries worldwide and the increase in customer satisfaction across the EU
- To do this, you will collaborate with leaders of product verticals, business units and various stakeholders across different product teams, in conjunction with the TCEU design team
- Accelerating strategic design delivery and ways of working
- Be accountable for design activity and delivery relating to key projects (Statements of work, delivery, operating model, resourcing, commercials, financials etc.)
- Create and own the design operating model to embed into existing and new projects and products to deliver against internal stakeholders and customer expectations
- Infuse hypothesis-driven and experimental ways of working to strategic and tactical activities
- Build feedback loops into every level of design to improve the flow of value
- Speak internally to raise the profile of Toyota Connected Europe’s design approach and outcomes
- Be the design authority for Design Thinking, UX & design frameworks, tools, capabilities and learning journeys and manage their continuous evolution by providing thought leadership on global design best practices and facilitate collaboration across international teams, to drive adoption of global design standards
- Build a world-class design team and continue to evolve their Toyota & Toyota Connected knowledge, design practice and operating model
- Champion Inclusive design and digital accessibility; establishing a set of strategic principles, working with engineering teams to embed these into all product design services
- Provide facilitation and coaching services to embed new ways of working to support learning & development
- Embed design thinking practices into all key strategic initiatives so that colleague/customer journeys are experiences are co-created and in service of their needs
- Lead innovation projects, to explore opportunities through ideation and incubation of new features, services and unmet customer needs
- Definition, tracking and assurance of desirability, viability, feasibility measures, objectives and key results for critical initiatives
- Coaching teams to accelerate culture transformation & strategic implementation
- Define and establish strategic frameworks, to manage design at scale through the use of design systems and design thinking and find ways to avoid organisational drag, remain agile and handle the increased operational complexity as the team and product/s scale
- Have the passion and ability to articulate your vision by working with design, management, and product stakeholders to drive the growth and success of TCEU’s design team within the business, upheld to a high standard of quality
- Bring operational rigour and workflow excellence to managing the function, including resourcing decisions
- Clearly and concisely articulate the business impact and ROI of design and design systems with multiple stakeholders
- Recruit and onboard and nurture new team members
- Build strategic relationships
