Who you are
- We’re looking for engineers who are independent, thoughtful, creative, and passionate about building the best payment gateway platform
- Bachelor’s and/or Master’s degree, preferably in CS, or equivalent experience
- 2+ years of industry experience in backend
- Independent, dedicated, and able to deliver production ready code with minimal guidance
- Experience with Java
- Experience with relational databases and caching solutions
- Expertise designing APIs and building RESTful services
- Experience with message queuing, data streaming, and workflow frameworks
- Experience with distributed system and service-oriented architecture
- Experience with Agile software development and Agile software solutions
What the job involves
- Airbnb Payments team supports this mission by economically empowering Airbnb businesses and our global community of guests and hosts
- Payments Processing team is the gateway and core platform of the Airbnb Payments ecosystem
- We are the team that connects Airbnb to the outside world of payment processors for the execution of any payment anywhere reliably, accurately, conveniently, and cost-effectively
- Our platform integrates with 19 different Payments Service Providers, processing 70+ currencies across 191 countries and moving billions of dollars on an annual basis
- We want our Guests and Hosts to have access to the payment method and currency they want because it is easy for Airbnb to add new processors and payment types, that payments are never blocked by an avoidable external processing problem, that our Community never needs to contact CS about payment discrepancies, that Airbnb is using the lowest-cost processor for a given route, and that internal Airbnb teams reliant on processor reporting are impacted minimally by processor reporting issues
- As a Software Engineer on the Payments Processing team, your mission is to design and build a payments gateway platform that is fast and easy to integrate with, reliable for money movements, smart to route our business cost-effectively, resilient to any external processor downtime in any market, and accurate for Financial reporting

- Some immediate examples of what you’d work on:
- Build our next generation of service-oriented-architecture gateway platform, making the processor integration simple, fast, flexible, and robust
- Work on payment provider integrations and migrations like PayPal and Bank of America
- Improve our smart routing system to make the traffic split flexible, cost-efficient, with more accurate anomaly detection and market failover ability
- Partner with Design and Product to innovate and lead new initiatives to improve our orchestrations, anomaly detections, payin and payout qualities
Our take
When Airbnb was originally founded, the product helped customers book air mattresses on people's apartment floors. Since then, Airbnb has had over a billion customers hosted through its platform. With more than 4 million registered hosts worldwide, it has grown into a major player in the hospitality sector.
Airbnb has been successful in disrupting the traditional holiday lettings sector. Before it existed accommodation was limited to hotels and bed and breakfasts, but Airbnb has mainstreamed the idea of renting out spare rooms or even entire homes. It has created a new sector of hosts purchasing properties to rent out on the platform and provides a level of flexibility and a range of offerings not previously possible for travelers.
Perhaps a victim of its own success, by 2022 supply of Airbnb-listed properties began to outstrip demand in some markets, as hosts overestimated the appetite for domestic travel. However, the company is still posting strong financials and has unveiled new tools to support its hosts in a tougher rental market. With a healthy bottom line and a huge user base, Airbnb is very likely to overcome the current market turbulence and continue its growth.
