Who you are
- Consumer Tech & ideally Marketplace Expertise
- 12+ years of FP&A experience with at least 8+ years in consumer technology companies, preferably in marketplace, platform, or network effect businesses
- Proven expertise in consumer tech funnel metrics, cohort analysis, and multi-sided marketplace unit economics
- Deep experience building and implementing ROI frameworks for customer acquisition, product development, and market expansion initiatives
- Extensive track record of building and leading high-performing FP&A teams in fast-growth environments
- Strong executive presence with experience presenting to boards, investors, and C-suite leadership
- Strong knowledge of US GAAP and experience with public company reporting requirements
- Outstanding communication and interpersonal skills with ability to translate complex financial concepts for diverse audiences
What the job involves
- We are seeking an exceptional Head of Marketplace FP&A at the Senior Director level to join our leadership team, reporting to the VP, Head of FP&A. This executive will drive strategic financial decision-making across our marketplace business through advanced analytics, consumer tech expertise, and proven ROI frameworks
- This role demands a finance leader with deep consumer technology experience who can translate complex marketplace dynamics into actionable business insights and drive measurable improvements in unit economics and business performance
- Lead comprehensive financial planning, budgeting, and forecasting for the entire marketplace P&L, including revenue optimization, customer acquisition costs, and operational efficiency initiatives
- Partner directly with business leaders and executive leadership to develop and execute against strategic finance initiatives and key investment decisions
- Drive weekly forecast updates, quarterly business reviews with sophisticated analysis of marketplace performance and growth & profitability drivers
- Build and maintain advanced ROI frameworks across the full customer journey - from acquisition through retention and monetization
- Lead analysis of consumer tech funnel metrics including CAC, LTV, conversion rates, retention cohorts, and unit economics across all marketplace segments and modes
- Develop sophisticated attribution models and incrementality testing frameworks to optimize marketing spend and product investments
- Proactively identify opportunities to improve marketplace efficiency, profitability, and growth through deep-dive analysis and competitive benchmarking
- Design and implement automated financial models and dashboards that provide real-time visibility into key business drivers and performance indicators
- Lead cross-functional initiatives to optimize pricing strategies, demand forecasting, and supply-demand matching
- Drive scenario planning and sensitivity analysis to support strategic decisions around market expansion, product launches, and capital allocation
- Manage the quarterly performance of the business
- Build, manage, and develop a high-performing FP&A team with expertise in marketplace dynamics and consumer tech metrics
- Establish best-in-class financial processes, including data collection and analysis
- Foster a culture of analytical rigor and business partnership across the finance organization
Our take
Lyft has aimed for consistent growth, making sure to pitch itself as a more reliable and friendly ride-sharing option than its main competitor, Uber. Uber has a greater market share and operates globally, but Lyft hopes to compete by its focus on ride-sharing over Uber's more diversified business approach and as a more rider-friendly and greener alternative to Uber.
Operating only in the USA and Canada, Lyft is in a position of being less affected by global events than Uber but also more vulnerable to local conditions. As an example, while it doesn't face the regulatory hurdles around employment rights that Uber does, it is unable to balance out the cost of the unusually expensive US auto insurance across its operations.
In 2022, Lyft acquired PBSC Urban Solutions, a bike-share equipment and technology supplier, allowing Lyft to compete in new verticals and reaffirming its commitment to green transportation. It has also trialed and launched Lyft Assisted, where drivers help passengers from their door into the car to get to medical appointments. These developments chime well with Lyft's unique selling point as a friendlier and more environmentally aware ride-sharing app.
