Company mission

To reimagine autonomous mobility through embodied intelligence.

Role

Who you are

  • B.S. or M.S. in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field, with 7+ years of software engineering experience
  • Strong experience with cloud technologies (e.g., AWS, GCP, or Azure) and building scalable, production-grade infrastructure
  • Proven expertise in CI/CD tools and frameworks (e.g., Jenkins, Kubernetes, ArgoCD) and experience implementing automated pipelines
  • Proficiency in infrastructure-as-code tools (e.g., Terraform) and containerization technologies (e.g., Docker, Kubernetes)
  • Strong experience with backend programming (e.g., Python, Go, or Java) and database management (e.g., SQL, NoSQL)
  • Experience with Bash scripting and other automation tools to enhance development and operational workflows
  • Familiarity with large-scale data processing systems and handling large datasets efficiently

Desirable

  • Experience in autonomous driving, robotics, or transportation industries
  • Exposure to ML-based workflows, particularly in building pipelines for large-scale data processing and evaluation
  • Familiarity with scenario generation, simulation, or validation tools for autonomous vehicle models
  • Experience in collaborating with Machine Learning, Science, or Simulation teams on infrastructure projects

What the job involves

  • At Wayve, we’re revolutionizing the way autonomous vehicles learn and operate, and the Scenario Technology and Coverage team plays a pivotal role in that mission by building scalable, data-driven scenarios for evaluating and validating self-driving models
  • As Software Tech Lead on this team, you'll be at the forefront of building scalable infrastructure, developing robust tools, and optimizing the end-to-end scenario workflow that fuels the validation of our driving models
  • This is a hands-on engineering role where you’ll design and maintain cloud-based infrastructure, build backend tools, and ensure the seamless operation of our large-scale scenario data pipelines
  • Build and optimize backend services and tooling that enable seamless data processing, augmentation, and scenario lifecycle management
  • Design, implement, and maintain scalable cloud-based solutions to support large-scale scenario generation and validation workflows
  • Develop robust, automated CI/CD pipelines (using tools like Jenkins, ArgoCD, and Kubernetes) that ensure efficient and reliable deployments of our scenario technology solutions
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including ML engineers and Simulation experts, to integrate infrastructure improvements and ensure smooth scenario coverage operations
  • Manage and optimize databases used to store and retrieve large-scale driving scenario data, ensuring performance and scalability
  • Use Bash scripting and other automation tools to streamline development workflows and system maintenance
  • Ensure reliability and efficiency by applying best practices in software development, deployment, and operations

Our take

Wayve is developing artificial intelligence (AI) that teaches cars to drive autonomously using reinforcement learning, simulation, and computer vision. Wayve’s core premise is that the big breakthrough in self-driving cars will come from better AI brains rather than more sensors or “hand-coded” rules which it believes are highly restrictive and not at all scalable.

The company said that it trains its autonomous driving system using simulated environments and then transfers that knowledge into the real world, where it emulates how humans adapt to conditions in real time. It ultimately relies on end-to-end deep learning AI rather than hard-engineered AI. This is one of the world's hardest problems to solve, but Wayve has made an exciting start and is taking a very different approach to competitors like Uber and Waymo, who are relying more on sensors.

Following a few years of innovative breakthroughs, Wayve now has backing from high-profile investors such as Microsoft and angels, including Uber's chief scientist Zoubin Ghahramani and Pieter Abbeel, a UC Berkeley robotics professor and pioneer of deep reinforcement learning. The company's strategic partnerships with outfits like Asda and Ocado to test-run autonomous deliveries, as well as publicity through the Minister is a show of confidence in the future of Wayve's solution to autonomous driving.
