Role
Who you are
- 5+ years of Android development experience
- Proficient in performance optimization on Android
- Expertise in Android development technologies, including Kotlin
- Experience with Android Jetpack libraries and frameworks such as Compose
- Solid understanding of both RxJava and Kotlin Coroutines
- Proven ability in rigorous unit testing and practical problem-solving
- Excellent communication and leadership skills, capable of collaborating and influencing cross-functional teams
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience
Desirable
- Advanced proficiency in RxJava and Kotlin Coroutines
- Experience with monitoring and observability tools like Datadog
- Skilled in profiling and performance optimization on mobile platforms
- Adaptability and willingness to wear multiple hats in a startup environment
- The ability to collaborate effectively with engineers, designers, and PMs across multiple teams to co-develop impactful solutions while contributing to system improvements
What the job involves
- As a Senior Android Engineer at Instacart, you will play a key role in developing features for our Shopper Android app
- With hundreds of thousands of Shoppers depending on Instacart for their work, your contributions will be crucial in scaling and improving the mobile experience to cater to their specific needs
- This position focuses on leading the architecture, design, and development of our android application, ensuring they provide the high performance and reliability our Shoppers depend on
- Architect, build, and maintain complex Android applications with clean code
- Implement perfect UIs that match designs
- Integrate with backend services to make sure we are delivering a great mobile user experience that is super-fast for end users
- Own important pieces of the product that have high visibility both internally and externally
- Envision new products and features that are inspired, considered, and forward thinking
- Lead the entire software development cycle from ideation to deployment and everything in between
- Communicate and collaborate extensively across multiple teams and functions within the company to drive consensus, align goals, and achieve effective cross-functional outcomes
- Engage in the full spectrum of the development lifecycle and collaborate with a wide array of business units to deliver solutions that are of the highest quality and usability

Instacart is an online grocery marketplace that operates a pick-up and delivery system in the US and Canada. Unlike standard grocery shopping, Instacart sends a “personal shopper” to your local store to buy your products, who then delivers them straight to your door on the same day via their own car. The company also supplies the Instacart Platform, with services for stores encompassing eCommerce, fulfilment, in-store, ads, and insights.
The increased modernization of society has meant more than ever that consumers are looking to buy their groceries online, making space for apps like Instacart to become daily life staples for years to come. Although the company must compete with other grocery store delivery services, such as Walmart’s own, it has expanded to cover large percentages of US and Canadian households, and is now aligned with over 900 retail banners across more than 75,000 locations.
Instacart's software offerings signify the company's focus on tech, designed to move it away from its dependence on the gig economy. To this end, the company has acquired FoodStorm, an order management system that powers end-to-end order-ahead and catering, integrating its technology into its enterprise suite. Despite an IPO in September 2023, market downturns have necessitated a 7% workforce cut in 2024, focused on middle management and creating a flatter organisational structure. With a new streamlined workforce, here's to hoping Instacart can maintain its momentum.
