Role
Who you are
- 7+ years of software engineering industry experience building backend software, with exposure to microservices, event-driven architectures, and batch processing
- 4+ years experience / strong proficiency in Java and the Spring Boot framework
- Strong fundamentals working with databases and data modeling, both relational (e.g. PostgreSQL) & NoSQL (e.g. DynamoDB)
- Experience with building applications in the cloud with AWS and experience with serverless infrastructure such as AWS Lambda
- Experience with containerization and orchestration infrastructure (e.g. Docker, Kubernetes, ECS)
- Experience with distributed messaging systems such as Apache Kafka
- Experience collaborating with Engineering and Product teams to turn complex business requirements into clean and extensible APIs
- Nice to have: experience with Python as well as test frameworks such as pytest or unittest
- Nice to have: experience with Node.js and Typescript
- Possess strong technical, analytical, troubleshooting, and communication skills with the ability to visualize and document processes
- Proficient at using appropriate security, documentation, and/or monitoring best practices
- Familiar with Agile/Scrum methodologies
What the job involves
- We are looking for backend software engineers who can build flexible and scalable backend architectures that can support a wide range of experiences for collectors who are trying to research, grade, and sell their collectibles. Your work will directly help improve collectors' enjoyment of the hobby and make it easier for new users to get started with the services that we offer
- This team is responsible for building modern cloud based applications and APIs and user-facing web and mobile applications to help users manage and monetize their collections. As a member of this team, your day-to-day work will be focused on building out the backend services and processes that support high profile features including the eBay Marketplace, PSA Offers, and the customer facing portal to the PSA Vault
- You’ll report to a Software Engineering Manager and work from any of our US offices. Remote or hybrid candidates will also be considered. We believe that there is significant value in in-person collaboration. If you live within a 1 hour commuting distance to one of our offices, you will be required to be onsite most of the time. This will be discussed further as part of the recruiting process
- Contribute to the design and development of new cloud-based software architectures
- Own and deliver complete features, including design, architecture, implementation, testability and deployment
- Provide feedback pertaining to technical designs, proposals and code
- Analyze existing applications / databases and identify areas for improvement
- Design and contribute to APIs that can support user experiences on web and mobile applications
- Participate across the entire software development lifecycle, taking features from concept to production release
- Collaboratively create solutions with other teams
- Troubleshoot software issues and debug a large codebase
- Develop and execute unit and integration tests
- Contribute to technical documentation to increase maintainability of software assets
Our take
Collectors offers a range of services for the collectibles industry including authentication and grading, collectibles research and sourcing tools, and a buy-and-sell marketplace. The industry is going through a huge renaissance, with a particularly high demand for sports and trading games cards, and Collectors has come to the fore as a major name.
While other big companies in the space include Fanatics and Steiner Sports, the fact that Collectors’ is more than a marketplace serves it well. Indeed, its most popular services appear to be grading and authentication, as well as storage vault services.
Collectors’ recent past has been very interesting to watch, as a 2021 acquisition led by current CEO Nat Turner unified the various brands of the former Collectors Universe, which was then relaunched as its current all-in-one platform.
It’s proving to be a shrewd move, as the “new” company’s first fundraise totaled $100 million, followed by an extra $123 million in post-IPO debt funding in 2023. With the collectibles industry forecast to double in value to be worth as much as $700 billion by end of the decade, Collectors is putting itself in a position of serious strength.
